Level 5 & 6

Week 5 📘

Welcome to another great week in 5/6! Please find our curriculum updates, Term 1 dates and reminders below.

Grade 5

Over the next two weeks, our Grade 5 students will be preparing for NAPLAN. Our focus is not on repeatedly practising test content, but on ensuring students feel comfortable and confident with the process of completing NAPLAN on their iPads. Students will complete a practice writing session and a practice maths session so they understand the format and expectations. They will also spend time building typing fluency and becoming familiar with navigating the NAPLAN platform. We will carefully walk through timing and testing conditions so students know exactly what to expect. Our aim is to reduce uncertainty, minimise anxiety and help students approach the assessments calmly and confidently.

Literacy 📖

Reading

Students will be transitioning into reading and analysing persuasive speeches, texts, stories and advertisements. We will unpack the vocabulary used, persuasive techniques, and levels of modality within each piece. This comparison and analysis will help students recognise how authors influence an audience and give them a clearer understanding of how to elevate their own persuasive writing.

What you can do at home:

Discuss advertisements you see together — on TV, online or in catalogues. Ask, “What is this trying to make you think or do?” or “What words make this sound convincing?” Helping students identify persuasion in everyday life strengthens their understanding.

Writing

We are moving into persuasive writing. Students will complete a range of short persuasive challenges designed to unpack persuasive vocabulary and techniques. They will practise strengthening their arguments, choosing precise language, and considering their audience. A strong focus will be placed on editing, refining and self-assessing their work to intentionally elevate the quality of their writing.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to form opinions about everyday topics and justify their thinking. Asking, “Why do you think that?” or “Can you give me a reason?” helps build confidence in constructing clear and convincing arguments.

Numeracy 🔢

Level 5

Students will engage in NAPLAN-style questions to become familiar with test formats and practise organising clear, well-thought-out responses. They will also be revising and extending their understanding of factors and multiples.

Level 6

Students will be identifying and classifying prime and composite numbers, strengthening their understanding of number properties. They will use factors to simplify multiplication calculations and improve efficiency when working with larger numbers. Students will also explore how to represent square numbers and triangular numbers, developing a deeper understanding of number patterns and how they can be visually and numerically modelled.

What you can do at home:

Practise quick recall of multiplication facts and discuss how numbers can be broken into factors. Asking questions such as, “What numbers multiply to make 36?” or “Is 29 prime or composite?” helps strengthen number fluency.

CBL 🌍

Big Idea: Community

Students are moving toward their challenge, which is centred around the upcoming Colour Run. As school leaders, they will explore how they can make the event feel more connected, inclusive and community-focused. Students will generate ideas and consider how leadership can positively influence school culture.

Wellbeing 💛

Cyber Safety – Is It Secure?

Students will be learning about protecting personal information, managing passwords responsibly, and practising safe online habits. Developing strong digital awareness is essential in helping students make safe and respectful choices in online environments.
