Book Week 2025

The Children's Book Council of Australia Book Week runs from 16-23 August and this year they are asking everyone to "Book an Adventure".

At Mount Carmel we are inviting our College community to "Swap a book...start an Adventure" at our Great Book Swap afternoon.

Donate recently published books you love but no longer need, by dropping them off at the College Library. Come to the Great Book Swap and for a gold coin donation, you can grab yourself something new to read.

All money raised from will go to the The Indigenous Literacy Foundation

When: Wednesday 20 August | 3:30pm - 4:30pm

Where: College Library

Illustrator Workshop

In addition to the the Great Book Swap, we will also be hosting an illustrator workshop, commencing at 4.00pm in the College Library.

Along with being one of our secondary Maths & Science teachers and a College alumni, Claire Neyland is also a talented artist, illustrating two books : A home for Little Penguin and Have you seen a Monotreme?

Published by 40 South, you can purchase copies of Claire's books on Etsy and bring them along to the workshop for signing.

Coming along to the Great Book Swap and the Illustrator Workshop will give you the opportunity to see the refurbishment of the College Library which was made possible by the generous support of, and funding from, the Parents and Friends Association.

This fun and meaningful event supports the inspiring work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). The ILF works in partnership with remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to provide the tools and resources they request to shape the direction of their children's literacy futures.

Through collaborative investment in community and strong, meaningful partnerships, the ILF focuses on sustainable change by supplying culturally relevant books and publishing First Nations stories in English and their first languages.

How the ILF makes an impact:

  • 495 remote communities are currently supported through ILF programs

  • 1,000,000+ books gifted to remote community organisations

  • 158 books published by the community, in 48 first languages as well as English.

Here's how you can help:

  • Donate your gently used children's books : we're collecting pre-loved books for our Book Swap sale.

  • Swap a book, support a cause : during Book Week, students can visit the library to choose a donated book to take home, all for a gold coin donation. It's a fun and meaningful way to share stories and support Indigenous literacy.

This year, we're proud to be part of House Marntuwunyini, named after the dugong in the Tiwi language, which is spoken by approximately 2,000 people on the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory.

We especially encourage our senior students to get involved and help make this year's Book Swap our biggest and best yet!

Books that aren't swapped will be donated to Library Aid Abroad and Street Libraries, ensuring every book finds a new home.
