Level 2

Botanic Gardens Excursion
On Friday August 8th, the Level 2 students visited the Royal Botanic Gardens as part of our Inquiry unit on mini-beasts. The students have been very engaged by this unit and were eager to search for minibeasts in the gardens. During the excursion, the students explored the Oak Lawn with magnifying glasses, learned about how worms can help our gardens at home and potted a plant of their own to take home. The students' behaviour and engagement with the excursion was absolutely fantastic for the whole day and they did a brilliant job representing HEPS!
Maths
The Level 2 students have been learning about collecting data. We discussed how there should always be a purpose for conducting a survey and thought about the types of questions we could ask to learn about our classrooms and make improvements. Instead of surveying their classmates about their favourite foods or activities, the students designed questions about issues in the classroom (such as how many library books each student has borrowed, what they have received reward gems for, etc) and then made observations about how this data could help us make changes within our classes.
Literacy
In Reading, the students have started exploring non-fiction texts as part of our research on minibeasts. They have learned to locate relevant texts and identify whether they are fiction or non-fiction. They have started locating key words within the text that are relevant to the topic and using these to summarise the text in their own words and keep relevant research notes on their chosen minibeasts. The students' have learned to recognise the difference between facts and opinions, and why this is important in information texts. In Writing, the students are currently planning their own information reports about minibeasts using the research skills they have learned.
