Year 3

Year 3 has been full of amazing learning experiences so far this term!

In reading and writing, students have been engaging with the novel Brindabella to explore themes of nature, friendship, freedom, and emotions. Through reading, discussion, and creative writing activities, students will develop comprehension strategies, expand vocabulary, and express their understanding through narrative, descriptive, and reflective writing tasks.

In Maths, the focus this term is on multiplication and division. Students are learning to understand the connection between multiplication and division, recognising how the two operations work together. They are recalling multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 to build fluency and confidence. Students are using a range of strategies and tools—such as arrays, equal groups, and number lines—to model and solve multiplication and division problems. They are also exploring fact families (for example, 4 × 5 = 20, 20 ÷ 4 = 5) to deepen their understanding of the relationship between numbers. Throughout the unit, students will solve real-world worded problems and apply both mental and written methods to explain their thinking and find efficient solutions.

In science we have been learning about Chemical Science – Solids and Liquids. During this unit, students will be learning about the properties of a solid and the properties of a liquid. Students will be investigating the change in state between solid and liquid when adding or removing heat.

We conducted a simple and safe experiment by placing chocolate chips in a zip lock bag and immersing the bag in warm water. Over time, students observed that the solid chocolate slowly melted, changing from a solid to a liquid. This hands-on investigation sparked great discussion and curiosity.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

In Term 3, the Year 4’s have been enhancing their knowledge across each of their subject areas.

In English, the Year 4’s have been conducting an author study. In Reading, students have been working on the book ‘Leo and Ralph,’ written by Peter Carnavas. They have applied a range of comprehension strategies to improve their understanding of the text. They have also continued to track their thinking and work on their goal during independent reading time, to help them focus on their specific needs. In Writing, students have been planning and writing detailed paragraphs to help them further develop their writing craft. They will soon be working on taking a story through the Writing process. Students have also had a weekly focus on different aspects of grammar, to help support their writing.

In Mathematics, for Number we have been working on multiplication and addition. Students are learning how to make arrays to support their understanding in this area. They have also been exploring factors and multiples of numbers. For Space, we have been exploring the properties of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. We have also began learning about composite shapes.

For Humanities, students have been learning about geography. They have began exploring different countries around the world, including Australia and South Africa. For each of these countries, they are learning about their different cities, as well as their climate, and some of their native animals. We have also begun to discuss ecosystems and biomes.

The Year 4 cohort has settled well into Term 3. We have a very busy and exciting term ahead.

Here is what some of our Year 4’s had to say about Term 3, so far:

“Term 3 has been fun so far. I have really been enjoying Writing.” – Daniel

“Term 3 has been so fun and I have already learned a tonne.” – Ava

Year 5

Dear Families,

Term 3 has been filled with exciting learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum. Our Year 5 students have demonstrated enthusiasm, curiosity, and a commitment to deepening their understanding in a range of topics.

Reading

This term in Reading, students have been immersed in the humorous and heartfelt stories of David Walliams, exploring texts such as Gangsta GrannyDribbling Drew, and Billionaire Boy. Through these engaging narratives, students have been learning to identify and interpret figurative language, exploring how authors use language to create mood and meaning. In addition, students have continued to use comprehension strategies, such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising, monitoring and questioning, to evaluate information and ideas to build literal and inferred meanings.

Writing

In Writing, students have been developing their narrative writing skills, learning how to construct detailed and engaging paragraphs. They have practised expanding their sentences using the five senses, incorporating high-impact vocabulary and applying figurative language to enhance their writing and engage the reader.

Mathematics

Our focus in Mathematics has been on fractions and 3D shapes. Students have explored key fraction concepts including adding, subtracting, ordering fractions, placing them on a number line, and calculating fractions of quantities. Alongside this, they have been investigating 3D shapes. Students naming, identifying, comparing, and analysing their properties. Students have enjoyed applying these skills through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks.

Science

In Science, we are illuminating the topic of light! Students have been investigating how light travels, how we are able to see, and identifying various natural and artificial sources of light. These investigations have sparked rich discussion and inquiry in the classroom.

Health

Our Health unit this term has centred on relationships. Students have explored the qualities of healthy relationships and have been discussing effective strategies for building and maintaining positive friendships and respectful connections with others.

Humanities

In Humanities, students have been exploring the topic of Natural Disasters. Students have been exploring the impact of floods, bushfires, cyclones, tsunamis on the environment and the impact on their communities. In week 5 students will have the opportunity to work in groups to design and create a diorama of a chosen natural disaster to present to the grade 5-6 cohort.

We are incredibly proud of the effort and growth our Year 5 students have demonstrated this term. We look forward to continuing a term filled with rich learning and meaningful experiences.

Kind regards,

Grade 5 Teachers

Year 6

Our year 6’s have settled back into term 3 in a positive manner.  And although it is a short term, our year 6’s will be busy with lots of fun activities and events to look forward to.

In Maths our year 6’s are learning about fractions and 3D shapes, while in reading they are doing an author study on the text Once by Morris Gleitzman.

In writing, they have been learning about important historical eras, which has inspired them to write their own historical narratives. In health we have been going over the changes their bodies will go through during puberty.

We have also started practising for our interschool sports days, where students get the chance to compete against other schools later in the term. This term’s sports are basketball, tennis, cricket and volleyball.

And while the last week of term is always one to look forward to, this term is extra special for our year 6 cohort as we have camp in Phillip Island on the last 3 days of school.

We thank all the families who have submitted their camp forms and made their payments, our students are all extremely excited for the fun 3 days we have planned for them.

We look forward to another successful and fun term, as our year 6’s are now on the home stretch of their primary school journey.
