Year Five
Dear Year Five families,
Although we are nearing the end of 2024, the excitement continues with students conducting scientific experiments, practising their Christmas Carols and the attending the Beach Program.
Christmas Carols
This is a friendly reminder that Christmas Carols for Timetable B will be on Monday the 9th of December, and Timetable A on Tuesday 10th of December. Both carols will begin on the school oval at 5:00pm and conclude approximately at 7:00pm.
Beach Program
We are excited to announce the Beach Program has been a hit! The Year Five’s have been making their way by bus to Williamstown beach and participating in a range of activities. Take a look at what they have to say about it so far...
In Reading, the Year Five’s have been using their reading comprehension skills to explore the main ideas within non-fiction texts. Students have been using their prior knowledge of the world to find supporting details within the text, justifying the ways an author conveys their message. The Year Five’s have continued participating in Book Club to share different perspectives and clarify ideas within the text with the help of their peers.
In Writing, students began applying their knowledge of scientific reports and independently creating their own. The Year Five’s conducted an experiment, using their thinking skills to devise a hypothesis and follow a procedure. Students used the quantitive and qualitative data collected during their observations, to share their results in different forms, such as tables, graphs and diagrams. The Year Five’s have been working towards improving the discussion component of their reports, by making connections to the real world and researching additional facts to support their hypothesis.
In Numeracy, students continued to refine their skills using a protractor to measure different angles such as acute, obtuse and reflex. The Year Five’s confidently categorised angles by their size. It’s fantastic to see students identifying these angles within their environment and learning new vocabulary such as complementary and supplementary angles this week.
LastlyIn Inquiry, students began investigating how energy is used in their daily lives and how it can be transferred from one source to another. The Year Five’s used different materials to make simple electrical circuits, such as aluminium foil instead of standard wires. We look forward on going further and deciding how to Take Action using we have learnt in the coming week.
Important Reminders
- On PE days and Fridays, students are permitted to wear their sports uniform. Students must be in their full academic uniform on the other days.
- In Term Four, all students must wear school hats at recess and lunch break times.
- Our school day commences at 8:30am and students will be welcomed into the classroom each day from 8.20am, which will give them time to prepare for their day ahead. Any student who arrives after 8.40am must sign in at the office and obtain a late pass.
- Student absences must be marked on XUNO as soon as possible by a parent or carer.
- Please ensure your students get in the habit of charging their laptops overnight so that they are ready to be used for learning during the school day.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement. We’re so proud of how hard the students are working!
Kind regards,
The Year Five Team
