Year Four
Dear Year Four Families,
Welcome to this week's edition of our school newsletter! As we continue to journey through the term, it’s wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and engagement from our students across all areas of learning. With various projects, events, and classroom activities underway, there’s plenty to celebrate. We’re excited to share some of the fantastic things happening at our school and provide a glimpse into what’s coming up in the weeks ahead!
Mathematics
In Maths, our students have been diving into the exciting world of chance and probability. They've been exploring concepts like likelihood, randomness, and predicting outcomes. Through fun activities such as rolling dice, drawing cards, and experimenting with spinners, they are learning how to calculate probabilities and understand terms like "certain," "impossible," "likely," and "unlikely." It’s been fantastic to watch students apply these ideas to real-life scenarios, making predictions and testing their hypotheses. Keep an eye out for some budding statisticians in our midst!
Students have enjoyed making predictions and then testing their theories with real-life experiments. This has sparked lively discussions about the nature of luck, chance, and how probability plays a role in many aspects of our world. It’s been great to see them develop a better understanding of how data can help us make informed decisions, even when we can't be certain of the outcome!
Literacy
In Literacy , our students have been working on explanation texts, a type of writing that aims to explain how things work or why things happen. This genre helps students build their skills in organising information clearly and logically, making it easier for readers to understand complex ideas.
In class, students have been using topic-specific vocabulary and cause-and-effect language to create detailed explanations. They’ve also been practising using diagrams, flowcharts, and labels to complement their writing and help make their explanations even clearer.
It has been fantastic to see students expressing their understanding through this form of writing. They are learning to break down complex topics into simpler steps, making them both informative and engaging.
Unit of Inquiry
Our final inquiry for the year is underway and students are busy refining their research and note taking skills. They are reading and viewing a wide range of sources to then write an explanation text with diagrams on how their landform was created. Some of the landforms students are investigating include mountains, icebergs, rainforests, gorges, savannahs, waterfalls and volcanoes. Students will be given the opportunity to create a model of their landform to present along side their explanation text.
Christmas Carols
Our Christmas Carols event is fast approaching, with dates set for December 10th (TTB) and December 11th (TTA). The event will be held over two nights to accommodate both timetables. Classes are paired together, and each group is practising a song they will perform on their scheduled evening.
