Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

As we quickly approach the end of the year, the students are still eagerly tackling their work in class. We are very proud of the efforts we have seen in Reading, Writing, Maths, and Inquiry and are excited to share these successes with you.

Reading:

In Reading, our focus has been on the concept of inferencing. This is a strategy that students use in their everyday lives, usually without realising it. Inferencing provides students the ability to analyse and understand the meaning of fictitious and real-world situations. We focus on identifying visual cues (such as pictures) and body language to assist us. As we draw closer to the end of the year, we continue to focus on our comprehension strategies as well, building upon student’s abilities to answer questions critically and creatively.

Writing:

In Writing, we have continued our focus on writing narratives, with a particular focus on the Settings, Problem, and Solution of a story. Students have created their own settings, identifying the different things in their settings that make them creative and unique. Students have also started looking in detail at what the Problem of a story is and how we come to an appropriate solution. The student’s ability to create interesting and imaginative simple stories has been very exciting to see. We can’t wait to show you the incredible efforts the students have made to improve their narrative writing

Maths:

In Maths, students have finished off their learning regarding fractions and have moved on to learning more about time and duration. We have been focusing on how long it might take to do an activity, using language such as ‘Seconds, Minutes, Hours, etc.” This allows students to gain a more realistic understanding of the tasks they are doing in their day-to-day lives and how long these tasks should be roughly taking.

Inquiry:

Our Unit of inquiry 'How the World Works', continues with excitement and wonderful curiosity. Our first few weeks of this new unit have focused specifically on the characteristics of the Sun and the Moon. Students have been highly focused on discussing how the movement of the Sun and Moon impact our planet such as the seasons of the year. Students have also been looking more specifically at the phases of the Moon and why we can only see certain parts of the Moon each night throughout the month.
