Year 4 Learning Focus - Conjuctions

This term, our Year 4 students are strengthening their writing by learning how to turn simple sentences into complex ones using subordinating conjunctions.

A simple sentence has just one idea — a subject and a verb. A complex sentence, on the other hand, combines an independent clause with a dependent clause, joined by a subordinating conjunction.

To help us remember these conjunctions, we’ve learnt a fun acronym —

I

S

A

W

A

W

A

B

U

B

and even a catchy song to go with it:

If, since, as and when,

although, while, say them again.

After, before, until, because.

These join clauses, that's their job.

ISAWAWABUB is the clue,

subordinating helps us through.

We’ve also had lots of fun creating our own imaginative interpretations of what a “WABUB” might look like — enjoy a glimpse into our creative work below!
