SUP Leader Student Workshops

The SUP Leader Student Workshops

This week, our Year 5 SUP leaders presented their workshops to our Year 2 and 3 cohorts.

They talked to the students about why they wanted to become a SUP leader and they taught the Year 2s and 2s all about Friendship Fires, Mean on Purpose and Bullying and then focussed on strategies to utilise when you experience a Friendship Fire and also when and how to use the 4Ds.

The strategies they taught aimed at “putting out” the Friendship Fire before it gets bigger and more of a problem. The younger students shared what Friendship Fires often look like for their age group and we definitely saw some common themes.

The examples they gave included:

“When someone is not letting you have a turn of a game you’re playing.”

“You’re playing tag but people are ganging up on the one person, like tagging them back all the time.”

“When we can’t decide what to play or what to do next in the game.”

“When someone is not letting you into something, like keeping it private and you feel left out.”

“When people are changing the rules of the game or when they aren’t following them- like when they say they’re not out, when we all think they’re out.”

The Year 5 leaders then modelled and explained three simple strategies that might help, before the 4Ds are needed.

  1. Try a compromise- is there a third option or something else that could be suggested?

  2. Ask a friend or student leader/older student for help.

  3. Take a break. Come back and try again when everyone is calm.

It’s important for our students to have a bank of strategies they can use, because situations can be different and one thing might not always work.

Every group that participated in the workshop, showed a really good understanding of the key concepts of the Stand Up Project, a really positive piece of evidence of the cumulative impact of the work of this year and last year’s SUP student leaders.
