        Lesson Plan: Communicating Respectfully

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to :

Identify different ways to communicate 

Communicate assertively and respectfully  

Show active listening

Identify what our body language is communicating

It will look like:

Speaking clearly

Speaking confidently 

Looking at the person speaking

Open and friendly body language

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour 

Why is it important?

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour 

 What would the behaviour look/sound like?                      

Examples

Students actively listening to each other 

Listening to others in a non-judgemental way

Accepting when someone disagrees with you

Making eye contact when talking to someone or listening to someone 

Clearly saying what you are thinking or feeling or wanting

Standing up for yourself 

Showing relaxed body language 

Facing the person speaking to you 

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Yelling or screaming

Looking away when someone is speaking to you 

Speaking in a forceful manner 

Telling others what to do, think or feel

Not saying what you really think, feel or want just to please someone else 

Showing ‘closed’ body language i.e. crossing your arms, facing away from someone 

Talking about others behind their back without speaking to them
