Incidents of racism

At Langwarrin Primary School we value the diversity of culture, ethnicity, and faith of all our students. We are proud of our diversity, and everyone is welcome at our school.

LPS has been told about some racist incidents that have not supported these values. This has included using racist language and slurs and drawing/displaying racist symbols. This behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at our school. We are taking immediate action as part of our commitment to make our school a safe and inclusive place for everyone.

Celebrating the diversity of our community makes us stronger, kinder and more innovative. We are committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel accepted, supported and are empowered to learn.

LPS has taken steps to ensure the school is a place free of racism and where everyone feels welcome, respected and supported. You can read about the school’s effort to prevent and respond to racism on our website here Policies & Documents | Langwarrin Primary School

To achieve our values and aims, everyone at LPS plays an important role, and we are writing to ask for your support.

LPS asks that you support your child/ren to:

  • understand that we celebrate diversity and multicultural inclusion
  • understand the importance of everyone at school being treated with respect
  • understand that LPS takes racism very seriously
  • understand that the school will support students if they experience or see their classmates experience this racism

Your partnership in reinforcing these values at home will significantly help create a more respectful and inclusive environment at school.

Expectations

Even though we are entering the latter stages of the year, our expectations on behaviour, uniform and attitude remain the same as they always do.  I expect to finish the year off strong without having to follow up on behaviours.  Please talk with your child about finishing the year on a positive note!

New playground

There was much excitement in the yard when the temporary fencing arrived on Monday.  A new senior playground is on its way! These works will take place over the next few weeks, and with any luck the Year 6 students should get a few turns before their time at primary school comes to an end.

Remembrance Day

Thank you to our school captains for commemorating Remembrance Day yesterday over the PA system this year.  Flags were lowered to half-mast until after our commemoration and then raised to full mast.

Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called 'Armistice Day' to commemorate ther armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Rephrasing Questions

The below list features alternatives to “What did you do at school today?” to which parents/carers often report to staff that they get a reply of “Nothing!” from their children. These questions may help you to initiate the conversation with your child/children:

“When were you happiest today?”

“What made you smile today?”

“Who were you kind to today?”

“What made your brain grow today?”

“Which places did you visit at school today?”

“Did you do anything nice for someone today?”

“Was it a quiet/busy/noisy/fun/relaxing/challenging day today? Why?”

“Did you spend time with a ‘new friend’ today? Would you like to become better friends with them/anyone else?” (Possible future playdate)

“Did you mostly work by yourself, with a partner or in a group today?”

“If you could do something from today again, what would it be? Why?”

“Did anything funny happen today?”

“Who did you talk to the most today?”

“If you were the teacher today, what would you have done more of or less of? Why?”

“Did you spend any time with students from other classes today? When? What did you do?”

“What were some good choices you made today?”

“What work are you proudest of from today?"

Give it a go, see what they tell you!

Christmas Concert

Save the date – Wednesday 10th December.  For new families, or families wanting a refresher.  This is our annual concert held on the school oval.  We truck in a portable stage and each class performs their Christmas dance.  Families are invited to bring along their picnic blankets and deck chairs to join in the evening of fun.  The LPS staff will be running a fundraising BBQ selling sausages, drinks and zooper doopers.  Our PFA will be running a raffle with lots of wonderful prizes to win.  We kick off with the first class at 5.30pm and we usually wrap up by about 7.30pm.  We hope you can join us on the night.  A reminder that the school grounds are an alcohol and smoke free zone.

Curriculum Day

A reminder that our last curriculum day for 2025 will be on Friday 28th November.  On this day staff will be working to prepare and plan for 2026.  Team Kids will be available on this day.

Have a great fortnight,

Mrs Pepper
