Nothing is impossible with God

In Matthew 18:2-4, Jesus says something I find extraordinary. He says that adults should actually be more like kids. Jesus’s disciples asked him, “Who is the greatest in God’s kingdom?” Jesus called over a little child and said, “I tell you the truth. You must change and become like little children. If you don’t do this, you will never enter the kingdom of God. The greatest person in the kingdom of God is the one who makes himself humble like this child.” Jesus doesn’t just say be nice to children; He says to be like them. So what does that mean?

One answer, I think, is that adults forget how to play. One of the best things about being a parent is that you get an excuse to play again - building forts out of blankets, racing cars and making them do awesome jumps/tricks (as my son calls them). Kids are good at joy. And most of all, God loves that children trust easily. They believe big things can happen. They run straight into waiting arms without worrying whether they’ll be accepted. That’s exactly how God wants us to come to Him - with that same open-hearted, fearless trust.

Perhaps more importantly, when you’re a baby, you don’t do anything to earn someone’s love. You don’t pay rent, you don’t do chores, you don’t achieve anything impressive. Adults, on the other hand, we feel like we need to earn things. But the gospel turns that idea upside down. When it comes to God’s love, we can’t earn it. It’s not a prize or a reward - it’s a gift.

As Max Lucado says, “To live as God's child is to know, at this very instant, that you are loved by your Maker not because you try to please him and succeed, or fail to please him and apologise, but because he wants to be your Father.” That’s the story of Christmas. It’s when Jesus chose to enter the world so that we could enter God’s family forever.

So maybe the challenge as we head towards Christmas isn’t to do the impossible, but to do something that seems almighty hard for adults and strange to say for kids: to be childlike again. To believe simply. To trust deeply. To remember that grace is a gift.

As Luke 1:37 says, “Nothing is impossible with God.” Jesus had a family, and He invites us into it. We start as children to remind us that love isn’t earned – it is the gift of grace. And this endless hope and relentless joy we receive all started with a baby boy.
