 Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

We have had a terrific response to our Socktober fundraiser! Many students have eagerly purchased socks during recess and lunch, and we are so grateful to everyone who supported this initiative. A special thank you to the students who gave up their lunchtime to help run the stall. WE SOLD OUT!!!

Through Socktober, students have been learning about the Catholic Social Teaching principles of solidarity and caring for our global community. The funds raised will go toward supporting communities in Zambia, helping provide resources for children and families in need.

We are also looking forward to our Zoo Excursion on Wednesday 5th November. Please note that students will need to arrive at school no later than 7:30 a.m. Following the excursion, there will be a school closure day and the Melbourne Cup Day public holiday.

This Week's Learning

Religious Education

In Religion this week, we have been learning that God created the world and asks us to take care of it. Students explored the beauty of creation and discussed the many ways God shows love through the world around us. We shared ideas for how we can care for the earth in our everyday lives. Students also reflected on how caring for creation is one way we show love for God and others.

Integrated Learning

In Integrated Learning this week, we explored how people can feel and respond differently within families and friendship groups. We discussed different emotions and shared positive ways to support one another. We also learned about showing respect for the country, including caring for the land, water, and animals. Students reflected and made a personal promise about how they can help care for Country in their own lives.

English

In English this week, we have been learning to read and spell ‘port’ Latin base words and explain what the different parts of these words mean. Students have been identifying morphemes to help them understand and spell new vocabulary with greater confidence. We also continued reading our class text, The One and Only Ivan, where students have enjoyed listening closely, making predictions, and summarising key events in each chapter. In addition, we have begun exploring persuasive letter writing, where students are learning how to share their opinions respectfully and clearly.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this week, we have been learning to estimate and measure capacity and volume using millilitres and litres. Students have been practising reading measuring jugs, making predictions, and comparing their estimates to the actual measurement. We also explored how to scale measurements, such as adjusting a recipe to serve more people and calculating total volume. Students enjoyed investigating how many smaller containers were needed to fill a larger one and explaining why their predictions were the same or different.

Social & Emotional Learning / RRRR

In Wellbeing this week, we explored how everyone has different fears, feelings, and coping strategies. Students shared examples of things that might worry themselves or others and talked about how people respond in different ways. We discussed positive strategies we can use to help ourselves feel calm and safe.We also learned that respecting each other’s differences is an important part of being a kind friend and classmate.

Auslan

In Auslan this week, we learned how to sign different pets using correct handshapes and movements. Students practised using a SASS (Size and Shape Specifier) to describe what their pet looks like, or a pet they would like to have. We enjoyed sharing our signs with partners and trying to understand each other’s descriptions. It was wonderful to see students communicating with confidence and creativity in Auslan.
