FOUNDATION NEWS

We’ve had a very busy couple of weeks in Foundation, filled with many fantastic experiences and learning opportunities! The days are certainly flying by.

One of the highlights was our very first Maths Games Day in Week 4. As enthusiastic mathematicians, we collaborated in small groups and put our skills and knowledge to the test across three exciting rounds. Round 1 involved a range of fun games and activities, including human number bingo, number relays, measurement challenges and making shapes with our bodies. We showed great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout. In Round 2, we challenged one another in one-to-one strategy games such as Extend-a-LineConnect FourCobra and Noughts and Crosses. Our final round really tested our problem-solving and thinking skills. Working together, we tackled multiple worded problems and applied our mathematical understanding in creative ways.

A big congratulations to Teams 6 and 12, who both finished as joint winners! Well done to Isla, Cairo, Billy, Vienna, Freddie, Arrow and Emilia C for their fantastic effort and teamwork!

This was followed by our whole school Athletics Day. Despite the rainy weather, we showed amazing enthusiasm, determination and courage as we participated in a range of individual and team events. We began with our sprints, before moving on to the baton relay and discus. When we returned to school, the sky cleared just in time for us to finish the day with tunnelball - a true test of our collaboration, cooperation and communication skills! Well done to everyone for their wonderful effort, teamwork and positive attitude!

Although Week 5 was a short one, we still had time and opportunity to begin preparing for our upcoming Celebration of Learning. As inquirers, we have been exploring special places. Each of us chose 1 place that is special to us and explained what makes it meaningful. We documented where our special place is, described its features, and shared what we love to do there. As thinkers, we also made connections to our learning about Creation, exploring different ways we can care for and show respect to these special places.

We will continue to find out about special places this week as we go on an excursion to the State Library. We can’t wait!

This week, we will be learning about…

  • Numeracy: Division- sharing equally
  • Reading: Inferring
  • InitiaLit: Using learnt sounds and digraphs to build, read, and spell words and sentences, reading decodable story books (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, qu, ee, z, zz, ch, v, x, th, wh, y, oo, ng, ay)
  • Writing: Narrative Writing, writing on the dotted thirds
  • Inquiry:  Caring for special places
  • Religion: Remembrance Day and All Saints and Souls

Here’s a reminder of some important upcoming dates to mark on your calendar for Term 4

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

What an eventful week we have had in 1/2 this week! Even though it was only a short week, it was full of fun!

We started the week with an incursion called War on Wrapping, led by EnviroCom. During the session, we learned about the growing waste problem caused by the overuse of wrappers, single-use items, and materials that cannot be recycled. We were shown images of local tips to help us understand where our rubbish goes and to highlight just how much waste our community produces. Students were then encouraged to think of ways we can replace single-use items with reusable alternatives. It was wonderful to see everyone engaged in the activities and confidently sharing ideas about how they reduce waste in their daily lives. Many of our students are already using reusable items such as water bottles, containers, yoghurt sleeves, and bringing nude lunches. A big shout-out to our parents for modelling these sustainable habits through the way you prepare lunches each day!

As writers, we have continued exploring persuasive texts and have been learning how to apply our understanding of their structure and key language features when writing independently. We have examined how persuasive texts use an introduction with a clear opinion, reasons - sometimes supported by evidence, and a conclusion. Students have begun planning and writing their own persuasive pieces on a chosen topic, deciding whether they are for or against the idea. Through this process, we are practising using powerful words, emotive language, and sequencing words to strengthen our arguments and demonstrate our growing understanding of persuasive writing.

As mathematical thinkers, we began exploring our new topic on location. We engaged in hands-on activities where we had to give and follow specific directions to move from one point to another, strengthening our ability to listen carefully and communicate clearly. We then practised using positional language to describe where we were in relation to other objects, such as in front of, next to, behind, and between. Some of us even experimented with using simple maps that included coordinates, using them to identify and explain where specific objects or places were located. We also worked with maps to practise using directional language to navigate from one place to another. These activities helped us build confidence in understanding and describing location in a practical and meaningful way.

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

This week in Maths, our students have been exploring the world of coordinates and the Cartesian plane. The Year 5s have been working confidently with one quadrant, learning how to plot and read points using ordered pairs. Meanwhile, the Year 6s have extended their understanding to all four quadrants, applying their knowledge to more complex problems and creating their own coordinate challenges. A great way to continue this learning at home is through the board game Battleship, by students explore the use of coordinates.

In Writing, students have been engaging in narratives, focusing on building tension, developing characters, and creating vivid settings. It’s been wonderful to see their imaginations come to life through their stories!

This week, 5/6MC class had the special opportunity to attend our Class Mass. It was a beautiful time for students to come together in prayer, reflection, and gratitude. The children participated reverently and joined in the readings and prayers.

Congratulations to the Year 5/6 Girls Bat Tennis team, who qualified to participate in the North Region Hot Shots tennis tournament. Although the children did not qualify for the next round, the girls are to be congratulated on their outstanding sportsmanship, participation and giving everything a good go. It was a wonderful day spent with the girls.

This week in The Resilience Project, we will be learning about creating change through the Embrace Collective. This is where we will recognise the power of individuals to act as role models and create the change we want to see in the world. We also hope to see many of our families attend the GEM Day on Frdiay, after assembly you are warmly invited to participate in a whole school activity.
