It’s crunch time for several Clayfield College sports teams as they head into decisive games this week, with some already wrapping up stellar seasons.
The QGSSSA Senior A Hockey team faces a nail-biting finish in their Winter campaign. Tied at the top of the ladder with Brisbane Girls Grammar School (BGGS), the team is preparing for a high-stakes final round against St Margaret’s. The match, scheduled for 10:00am on Saturday 31 August at UQ, could determine the overall winner.
On the volleyball court, the QGSSSA 9B team has wrapped up an impressive season, securing 12 points and sitting clear at the top of their division. With two bye rounds ahead, the team will be eagerly watching how Moreton Bay College performs in Round 8, as MBC and BGGS are tied at 8 points each. The outcome of these matches could determine if Clayfield remains the outright winner of their division. Stay tuned for further updates as the competition unfolds.
In the BBI Junior Boys Basketball competition, the Under 15 team have secured second place on the ladder with 32 points. They’ll head into the semi-finals this week, taking on third-placed Green Lynx, who finished with 29 points. The game is set for 6:20pm on Court 1 at Brisbane South State Secondary College. After a strong season, the boys will be looking to carry their momentum into the finals.
As these teams prepare for their final challenges, the College community stands united in support, rallying behind them as they push for championship success.

“Michael Maddalena’s Remarkable Performance at the School Sport Australia 12 & Under Tennis Championships”
Ben Bleechmore, the Queensland Schools Team Manager, has shared a wonderful insight into Michael and his successful journey at the recent School Sport Australia Tennis Championships in Darwin.
Michael’s positive attitude and steadfast commitment to all games were integral to the Bruce Cup team this year. Competing against top players from across the nation, he secured 16 out of 18 matches and remained undefeated in singles while representing Queensland at both number 6 and number 5 positions. His consistent work ethic and responsiveness to coaching advice truly set him apart.
Michael’s contribution was crucial in helping Queensland reclaim the Bruce Cup, continuing the state’s impressive dominance in recent years. Congratulations, Michael, for becoming part of a sporting dynasty and representing Queensland with pride!
The Clayfield College Open Basketball team took to the courts at the Northside Sports Centre for the CBSQ Molten Wildcard Basketball Tournament, aiming to secure a coveted spot in the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournament which is held annually with over 500 teams competing. The girls showcased impressive skill and grit throughout the competition, notching up two significant wins in the preliminary rounds.
In their first match, the team battled against Rochedale State High School in a tightly contested game, emerging victorious with a score of 41-34. Their confidence grew as they headed into their next match against Good Shepherd Lutheran, where they dominated from start to finish, securing a commanding 58-14 win.
However, the path to the Championships proved challenging in their final match against Bremer State High School. In a tough and physical encounter, the Clayfield College team fought hard but ultimately fell short, with a final score of 31-25. This result unfortunately knocked them out of the competition.
Despite the disappointment of not progressing further, the tournament was a valuable learning opportunity for the team. The girls demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit, qualities that will undoubtedly serve them well in future competitions. With their sights set on 2025, the team is determined to build on this experience and come back stronger when the opportunity presents itself again.
Congratulations to the Clayfield College Open Basketball team for their hard work, dedication, and excellent performances at the CBSQ Molten Wildcard Basketball Tournament.
