As inquirers, we tuned in to Bullying as part of National Anti-Bullying Week. This year's theme is ‘Everyone Belongs’ and we have been exploring the statement ‘Be a Buddy, Not a Bully!’ As thinkers and communicators, we came together as a cohort to come up with a promise. We made a list of promises as to how we would be Buddies and not Bullies and shared our ideas about what this might look like in our school community. We read the story ‘Billy the Bully’ and discovered that Bullying is a repeated action that is done on purpose and occurs over and over again. We drew how we would follow our pledge on hands and presented all of this at assembly on Friday. Check out our promises below!
As people of faith, we made connections to Bullying from a Catholic Lens. We unpacked the phrase from Luke 6:13, ‘Do unto others as you would like them to do to you‘ and discussed what this means and what this looks like for us in foundation.
At St Fidelis, in Foundation, we promise to…
‘Be a Buddy and not a Bully’.
We promise to be kind to each other by including everyone.
We will use nice words and manners.
We will use our hands and feet for good and not to hurt others.
This is our promise to always be a good friend!
As readers we tuned in to Book Week by beginning to read some of the shortlisted texts. We made connections, shared new facts, identified and produced different rhyming words and summarised the beginning, middle and end of different stories.
This Friday, August 23rd, we will have our Book Week celebrations at school. This year’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. Students are invited to dress up as a book character and there will be a parade in the hall at 9am!
Key Date Reminders:
- Book Week Author Visit Tuesday 20th August
- Book Week Parade Friday 23rd August
- Hot Food Lunch Friday 23rd August
Also, a friendly reminder to please ensure your child’s library books are returned to school prior to Library Day, which is held every Friday.
Enjoy the week ahead!

YEAR 1/2
What a week we’ve had in the 1/2 learning spaces!! We learned all about science, from lung capacity and lead to elephant toothpaste, and you’d never guess how big the toothpaste was. Huge is your answer! This week, we look forward to our Author visit on Tuesday and the much-anticipated Book Week parade on Friday!
As readers and writers, we have been continuing to consolidate different sounds. Each week, we have been brainstorming words that follow specific spelling patterns; for example, last week, we looked at words that contained the dge trigraph. This week, we will be focusing on the trigraph ear. Below are some words you might like to practise with your child at home.
As researchers, this week, we were so excited to explore and experiment in our Science morning, celebrating National Science Week. We hypothesised, made predictions, and, best of all, had some hands-on activities where we saw various chemical reactions take place. Some allowed us to fill balloons, others were more reactive, and lastly, we even saw coloured water dance across cups. With the help of our scientists we created lava lamps, saw lung models and investigated objects that might have contained lead. It was also exciting to see real fossils and look at non-Newtonian fluid and forces of objects.
Thank you to our parent-volunteers, Dion Denes, Richard Salib, Nicholas Romeo, Corey Bannister, Mick and Angela Huff. We are so grateful that you took the time to help us learn.
As we celebrated National Bully Prevention week, we created a class pledge promising to be upstanders, to speak kindly and to take care of other people’s hearts. It was also nice to present our Wrinkled Hearts at Assembly. A solid reminder for students and the broader St. Fidelis Learning Community: “Before you speak, think, and be safe, it’s hard to fix a wrinkled heart.”
Reminders:
- This is a friendly reminder that the Book Week Parade is this Friday. If you haven't already, this is the last week to prepare your child’s costume. The theme is ‘Reading is Magic.’
- Please send your student’s teacher a photo of your child with their dad or special person for assembly on August 30th.
- Lunch order day 23rd of August

YEAR 3/4
As a school community, we acknowledged National Week of Action against Bullying. We gathered together as a year level to dive deeper into what bullying is, the types of bullying, what do or say when we notice bullying behaviours and collaboratively constructed a pledge to help us take action.
Our Pledge
In Year 3/4, we commit to take a stand against Bullying.
We will treat others with RESPECT and KINDNESS.
We will show others EMPATHY and COMPASSION.
We will WELCOME and build positive RELATIONSHIPS with others.
We will have the COURAGE to stand up for others.
We will create a SAFE learning community for others.
As writers, we are learning to write an information report on Planet Earth. We have been using a variety of sources to gather information and record important facts. Our information report will include five paragraphs which are… an Introduction, Physical Features, The Moon, Rotation and orbit of Earth, and lastly the Conclusion.
Congratulations!
Well done 3/4BP for hosting assembly this week!
Science Day
We are celebrating Science Day on Thursday 22 August and we are looking for parent volunteers to join us from 11:40am to 3:30pm. If you would like to help out, please email your child’s classroom teacher.
Have a lovely week!

YEAR 5/6
We have had a wonderful and busy week of fun and learning of course!
Last week was Science Week and it wouldn’t be a science week without experiments! We had a wonderful time channelling our inner scientists when making Fizzy Sherbet, Squishy Ice cream and Corny Goo! We had such a great time learning about chemical reactions and physical changes throughout the experiments. Thank you to the wonderful parent helpers who came in to support us in our learning.
We also celebrated Bully Zero National Awareness Week, dedicated to promoting kindness and standing up against bullying. The school community came together to raise awareness and foster a supportive school environment. One of the highlights was the creative shoe design where we crafted shoes with powerful slogans like "Step Up, Stand Strong" and "Walk Away from Bullying." These vibrant designs symbolise our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. Let’s continue to walk the talk and make a difference in our community!
We had an exciting and educational visit from our local firefighters! The event began with an engaging presentation where students showcased various topics they had researched. From the science of fire to the importance of fire safety, each presentation demonstrated the students’ hard work and enthusiasm.
Following the presentations, the highlight of the day was a tour of the fire truck. The firefighters explained the different equipment on board and how each tool plays a crucial role in their work. Students were thrilled to explore the truck, try on firefighting gear, and learn firsthand about the life-saving techniques used by these everyday heroes.
A big thank you to the firefighters for their time and for making the learning experience both informative and fun. It was a day filled with curiosity, excitement, and valuable lessons about safety and teamwork.
On Sunday, Miss Maddie, Miss Sargent, and Miss Zorzut were seen out and about cheering for a team outside their usual colours: the West Coburg Footy team, who had made it into the Grand Final! A huge congratulations to Anthony, Francesco, Jake, Lennix, Dannte, and Patrick for your exceptional sportsmanship and dedication. Although the final score didn’t reflect it, you played an impressive game of football!
We also had the privilege of attending a fantastic singing performance by our very own Olivia S. Her captivating voice left everyone in awe. Olivia's performance was a true testament to her talent and hard work, showcasing both her skill and passion for music. A big round of applause to Olivia for delivering such an impressive and memorable performance! Keep shining!
We hope you have a wonderful week!
The 5/6 Team,
Olivia Sargent, Maddie Comrie & Bianka Zorzut
