Promoting Positive Behaviour in the School Yard

The outside yards are essential spaces where children develop social skills, engage in physical activity, and build friendships.

We have noticed an increased interest in football, soccer, and basketball this term. To ensure that these games can continue and that the yard remains a positive and enjoyable place for everyone, we will change how we manage the behaviour in the yard.

Last term, we communicated to the students and parents the types of games and activities allowed in each playground area and what year levels could play. These posters are around the school. We also clearly discussed our expectations for the new sandpit equipment and its use.

This term, our focus has been on managing the behaviour during the football and soccer games. Through sports sessions, Michael Jennings has endeavoured to improve our students' understanding of the rules and shown them how to modify the rules and skills for the playground. We have extra supervision and support on Benny Courts and Hawthorn Yard. We have also implemented a referee to help with the games on Wednesdays and Fridays.

As a leadership team, we have met to make some changes to the behaviour management in the yard.

The Playground behaviour management will include the following:

  • Extra supervision on Benny Courts and Hawthorn Yard
  • Teachers and Educational Support Officers will record student behaviour on sheet that will be monitored by leadership
  • Student behaviour will be tracked and monitored, and parents will be contacted.
  • Students who do not show respect, play safely, or take turns will be given a time-out, and their names will be recorded in the student tracking book.
  • If students' names are on the tracking sheet more than once, they will be removed from the yard, and their parents will be notified.

We will also change some activities students can play in each yard to minimise conflicts and keep students engaged.

Our ultimate goal is to create a playground environment where all students feel safe, respected, and valued. By promoting positive behaviour, we not only enhance the school experience for our students but also help them develop essential life skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Vira and Michael have communicated these expectations and changes to students at the assembly on this morning. We appreciate the continued support of our school community as we work towards this goal. Together, we can make the playground where every child can thrive.
