HR MATHS CHALLENGE

This term we are introducing some exciting Maths challenges for all to get involved in. Maths is such a fun and interesting subject that has many different elements for everyone to enjoy. It’s not just about numbers and many people have fantastic ways of thinking about Maths in such broad ways.

So to keep things interesting and create some fun family activities, we are going to be posing some Maths challenges in the newsletter each month. These will be for you to enjoy at home, then students will have the opportunity to share their discoveries at school.

Specific instructions will be provided on each activity. Some activities may have prizes, others will be purely for family or class bragging rights!

This weekend we are proud to have 3 teams competing at the Tournament of the Minds competition at LaTrobe University Bendigo.

20 students from Grade 5 and 6 have been working tirelessly for the past 5 weeks preparing their responses to the challenges set for them. They have learnt skills in teamwork, creative thinking and problem solving. They should be commended for their commitment to their team and putting themselves outside of their comfort zone to be the best they can be.

We thank Miss Spence, Mrs Kerlin, Mrs Angove and Mrs DeAraugo for the time they have given to assist the teams whilst preparing and for supporting them at LaTrobe tomorrow.

Good luck!

GRADE 1 MATHS

Mr Lovell and Mr Van Der Staay gave the Grade 1's a big problem to solve in maths this week. If we were building a new sandpit, what would be the best way to move the sand?

Using their problem solving skills and knowledge of mass and capacity, 1CV and 1DL worked hard to figure out the most effective and efficient way to move the sand with the materials they were given.

There was lots of learning and plenty of fun to be had!

In the end, the Grade 1's decided that maybe we need some shovels and Mr V’s ute to get the job done quickly!
