2024 Australian Geography Competition – Year 9 Students

Geography students from Glen Eira College tested their geographical skills and knowledge against students from all around Australia in the 2024 Australian Geography competition.

Over 54,00 students from 600 schools across Australia entered the Australian Geography Competition, so the results give us an external benchmark as to how our students are going in certain aspects of Geography.

Rachel Honey, the Competition’s national coordinator, said ‘The competition aims to encourage student interest in Geography and to reward student excellence. Geography is such an important subject because it develops in students a holistic understanding of the world around them, and their place in it.'

We have a number of student geographers at our school who performed to a very high level in the competition this year.

Year 11 Legal Studies

The Virtual County Court Incursion on Wednesday 7th August gave the Year 11 Legal Studies students an in depth look into the work life of a County Court Judge and what it means to be one.

The Judge Georgio explained to everyone that when he first finished school, he wasn’t sure about what he wanted to do and ended up spending time working overseas in London before he got into his career in criminal law. He also told us what his time was like as a barrister before he became a Judge.

He answered all the questions of our class about his responsibilities and experiences as a County Court judge in detail, including the hardest part of his job being applying penalties, which is even trickier if he disagrees with the jury.

Overall I think that it was a very informative and interesting incursion further strengthening our knowledge about legal terms such as: beyond reasonable doubt, what the role of the jury is, and the factors taken into consideration when administering a sentence. He and his associates were also very friendly and I hope to see them again soon.
