Celebrating the Joy of Reading: Book Week 2024

This year’s Book Week celebrations at Our Lady Help of Christians have been nothing short of magical. The school has been buzzing with excitement and joy as students immersed themselves in a week filled with the love of reading, creativity, and community spirit.

One of the highlights of this week was todays much-anticipated Book Week parade. The sight of our students, each proudly parading in their carefully crafted costumes, was truly heartwarming. From characters in classic tales to modern-day heroes, the creativity and enthusiasm on display were extraordinary. The smiles on the faces of our students as they walked, twirled, and waved to their peers and teachers captured the sheer delight that comes from being part of something special. It was a true celebration of the imagination and the power of stories.

The Book Fair and Great Book Swap also brought immense joy to our school community. The Book Fair, with its shelves lined with treasures waiting to be discovered, was a bustling hub of activity. Students eagerly browsed through the collection, their faces lighting up as they found a new adventure to take home. The Great Book Swap was another highlight, where students exchanged their well-loved books for new stories to explore. It was wonderful to see our community coming together to support such a worthwhile cause, with proceeds going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, promoting literacy and celebrating Indigenous languages and culture.

None of these wonderful events would have been possible without the incredible dedication of Angela Vines. Her tireless efforts in organising the Book Fair, setting up for the parade, and transforming the library into a haven of literary wonder did not go unnoticed. Her passion for fostering a love of reading in our students shines through in everything she does. On behalf of the entire school community, I extend my deepest thanks to Angela for making this Book Week an unforgettable experience.

On a personal note, this week has reminded me of the simple joy that reading brings. There is nothing quite like curling up in bed with a great book, allowing yourself to be lost in the adventures within its pages. I remember being completely captivated by Enid Blyton's The Faraway Tree series as a child, where I could escape into the enchanting world of Moon-Face, Silky, and the magical lands at the top of the tree. That joy of discovery, of finding new worlds to explore, is something I see mirrored in the eyes of our students as they dive into their own literary adventures.

This week has been a true celebration of our school community, coming together to share in the joys of reading. Thank you to everyone who made it possible, and here’s to many more adventures, both on the page and beyond!
