Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,
Our year at Hazel Glen College has started with visible enthusiasm and positive energy across our Primary Years. Students are getting to know new peers in their 2026 classes and settling into their new classroom routines for the year.
Our theme this year is 'Connect First', and our teachers are providing many opportunities for our students to connect to other students, staff and our College community. A reminder that classes start at 8:50 am for Primary Years students and the bells will now reflect this. For students who arrive before this time, the yard is supervised from 8:35 am and doors are open to the classrooms from 8:40 am unless the class teacher is absent, on yard duty or in attendance at a meeting. In this case, students are encouraged to line up to wait outside the classroom.
To begin the year, our staff completed professional learning with a focus on connection, School Wide Positive Behaviour Support and child safety. Our SWPBS matrix has been displayed around our College and shared with all our staff. We invite our community members to work alongside us to help encourage a positive and supportive learning environment that reflects our College values.
Our teaching and learning focus this year will be to continue to focus on planning and assessments to ensure that our students are progressing over time with their learning. This is done through professional learning, positive learning routines and our Instructional model. All of our teaching and learning programs are evidence-based, which helps our students with building a safe and positive routine in our classrooms. Below is our SWPBS matrix.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our 2026 Primary Years Captains. We know that these students will represent their peers and our College with pride and will have a positive impact on all our students in our Primary Years.

Primary Years Vice Captains: Georgia W and Onali W
Our students have been learning about our College digital expectations and responsibilities in class. For this to be effective, there needs to be a partnership between our College and home, as education centres on safe technology use and respectful online interactions, both inside and outside of the College.
We're teaching our students about responsible digital behaviours, including how to recognise and respond to online dangers and threats. We support students in their development of key digital skills they will need to make a positive impact in the world, and we encourage you to have conversations at home with your children about safe technology use. The Acceptable Use Agreement has been sent to all families. Please go over this important information with your child or children.
To celebrate the start of a new year, we will be holding our first community event on Tuesday, March 3rd, 3-4 pm. This will take place on the synthetic grass outside of the Learning Neighbourhood. We invite all Primary Years to come and meet other families and enjoy a sausage sizzle.
Our first Primary Years assembly will be held in the Furze Fitness Centre (Gym) on Friday 13th February at 2 pm, and all our Primary Years parents and carers are welcome to attend. Our assemblies are an opportunity for our College community to connect and celebrate the wonderful learnings and moments of our students. We hope to see you there!
