On Tuesday 30 January we welcomed our new Year 7 students to Chevalier College. The hall was abuzz with nervous excitement, as they got to know each other, meet some key teachers, and learn more about their daily routine.
Special thanks to the Year 11 Buddy Leaders who helped ease the Year 7 students into high school life with fun games and a tour of the College, and to the Stage Coordinators in particular Stage 4 who made the day a success.
The training that the Year 11 Buddy Leaders undergo certainly helps them facilitate workshops for the new Year 7 cohort. They take the new students through some icebreakers to initiate new friendships, answer questions and provide advice on daily high school life.
It's lovely to see many of these friendships continue beyond Welcome Day.
A big thank you to Mr Wilson and Mr Higson who facilitated the training and continue to work with the Buddy Leaders, enhancing their leadership skills which allows them to fulfil their roles successfully.
Our Student Leadership group led by Captains Sarah Ruse and Hugh Hansen, along with Vice Captains, Olivia Hassall and James Murray, are working hard with many initiatives and serving the Chevalier community. As a Student Leadership group, they are working well together to produce Student Led Assemblies. The content that they have developed is relevant, interesting, and well-presented. The experience will put them in good stead for leadership roles post College life.
It is very exciting to see that Chevalier has integrated Wellbeing lessons for students in Years 7-10 into their timetable. This tailored program emphasises specific wellbeing areas and strategies relevant to each year group, occasionally sharing common modules differentiated for each year group.
This program will directly connect with ‘SIM’, a positive psychology approach which supports each student to identify and apply their strengths, interests and motivations, and therefore enhance their overall wellbeing. The aim of this new wellbeing initiative is to use time more efficiently, so that students acquire the knowledge and skills to flourish.
Another exciting wellbeing course implemented in 2024 is the mydesign SIM course. By the students unpacking their Strengths, Interests and Motivations (SIM), they develop an understanding of who they are, what they can do and what problems they can solve, resulting in their purpose starting to emerge. This again prepares them for life after school and allows them to have a greater understanding of who they are.
