PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NAPLAN

It has been so incredible seeing our students engage so well with NAPLAN these last two weeks.  NAPLAN gets a lot of bad press, but when approached the right way it is a very useful tool for schools.  We don’t want our students to stress, have anxiety or worry about their NAPLAN results.  Instead, going in and trying their best gives them good practice in testing environments and opportunities to show what they can do.  We can use this information to compare how we’re assessing individuals day-to-day in the classroom to make sure we’re getting it right.  It also provides another tool to identify learning gaps that we can assist to fill.  Most importantly, NAPLAN helps us identify any gaps in our whole school curriculum that need to be addressed and as well as the strengths in what is being taught.   When the focus moves away from high stakes and on to using NAPLAN as a supportive and diagnostic tool, the results for students and the school become so much better.  Well done to everyone who has given their best.

ATHLETICS

Athletics was another great day out where students have had an opportunity to shine and demonstrate their passions and skills outside of the classroom.  Our school has some phenomenal athletes and it is always fantastic to see the pride on their faces as they achieve in this environment.  The fun activities also happening were fantastic for those to participate who are not so keen on sports, and even seeing the positive social interactions between students of Morwell Campus and between the campuses of the College was excellent.  Thanks to the parents who came to support their children on the day, it was great seeing you all there too.

DOCTORS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Did you know that your child has free access to a doctor and nurse at the school?  The Doctors in Secondary School program has been running at Morwell Campus for a number of years now.  It provides a free and confidential service to any of our students who need to access a doctor for any health concerns.  The clinic operates just like any other doctor and can do referrals, prescriptions, tests and advice.  Students wanting to access the clinic can simply walk in (it’s open alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays in the back of the gym), or make an appointment through our wellbeing staff or by using Teams to contact the clinic Nurse directly (send a chat message to DiSS Nurse).  The doctor and nurse have been around to meet all the Year 8-10 students in classrooms and attended our wellbeing lunch session recently.  Soon we’ll be introducing them to all Year 7 students with a tour of the clinic.  If your child has any health concerns, encourage them to make use of this service because we know how difficult it can be to see a doctor at other practices.  You are also welcome to attend with your child if you wish.

PARENT TEACHER STUDENT CONVERSATIONS

Parent Teacher Student Conversations are running on the last two days of term.  On Wednesday, 27th March, classes will operate as normal and the conversations are available to be booked from 3:30pm to 7pm.   On Thursday, 28th March, no classes operate at the school and conversations can be booked from 10am to 1pm.  In order to book an appointment, log on to Compass.  If you have any issues, please contact our administration staff for support.  I strongly encourage parents to attend and speak with the teachers of your child.  I also strongly encourage students to be  a part of the conversation.  By secondary school, students need to take ownership over their education and be prepared to accept the learning feedback from their teachers to either change or enhance their learning habits.  Parents need to have an understanding of the progress of their children to encourage and support – we know that all students need a bit of guidance along the way.  If you can’t make it to either of these times, please make contact with your child’s teachers either by phone, or by sending an email through Compass.
