VPC News

VPC has hit the ground running this year.

In Literacy we are doing a book and film study of Hidden Figures.  We have just finished the book and have been amazed at the themes throughout it and all that we have learnt about America in the 50s and 60s.  Some of the themes the book has covered are racism, perseverance, resilience, exploration and practically using maths.

We have had a number of foci in maths this year, but our big one for this term has been a project called Earn and Learn.  In this program students are required to manage a weekly budget and successfully run a home.  They are also required to buy and run a car, buy, and manage a phone as well as acquire and manage a pet.

Our Work-Related Skills program has focused on managing the garden beds we set up last year.  We have been enjoying some of the delicious veggies that we planted.  The Black Russian Tomatoes are especially good.  Thanks to John for all of his help.  As part of our Work-Related Skills Program this term we are also be looking at the eight Employability Skills and how we can improve on the skills that we need to.

Our Personal Development Skills program has been based in the kitchen this term.  We have focused on cooking in small groups and making contributions as part of a team.  This has been a lot of fun as we have been able to try different meals for each group.  As an example, one week we made four different types of Zucchini Slice, each one a different colour with different ingredients.  One week our kitchen had lost power, so we turned our classroom into a kitchen.  We used this as an excuse to make as many different types of French Toast as we could find.
