Mental Health in Primary Schools

What is Mental Health in Primary Schools?

Developed by paediatricians, educators, psychologists, researchers, and teachers, the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative upskills experienced teachers to become Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders and aims to increase the capacity of Victorian primary schools to support the mental health of their students.

The role of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader

  • embeds evidence-based training and resources across the school to build the capability of staff to better identify and support students
  • provides support to individual teachers in the classroom with students who have been identified as in need
  • creates clear pathways for students who may need further assessment and intervention within the school and to external community-based services
  • uses informed referral pathways to strengthen linkages between schools and community services
  • works proactively with regional education department staff, school wellbeing teams and other health professionals to engage appropriate mental health support
  • is responsible for implementing whole-school approaches to mental health and wellbeing
  • contributes to the development of larger-scale reform, promoting what works to support students’ mental health and wellbeing

Why is this important for primary school children?

Children’s mental health is fundamental to their development and learning. Good mental health means having a positive sense of wellbeing, coping with challenges and being able to realise individual potential. Unfortunately, not all children experience good mental health. Schools are an ideal platform for promoting children’s mental health. Yet, without resourcing and dedicated training and support, it can be challenging for teachers to navigate increasing mental health issues in the classroom.

Sarah Bigmore

I am an experienced educator with over 12 years working across all year levels as a Classroom Teacher, Learning Specialist, and now Assistant Principal. I have led whole-school initiatives that support staff, students, and families, with a focus on wellbeing, inclusion, and engagement. I’ve also played a key role in implementing the Disability Inclusion reform across the school. By working in partnership with local community organisations, I help ensure students and their families have access to the wellbeing support they need. I’m deeply committed to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments where every student can thrive.

Although my experience is predominately in the classroom, teaching Year 3-6 over 11 years I have been given an amazing opportunity to embark on the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader at Miners Rest Primary School.

Alongside Sarah Bigmore, we have participated in rigours training days to build our capacity and knowledge of early intervention to primary school mental health. I am very much looking forward to building my skills and understanding of early intervention at a school level and supporting our children to be happy and healthy individuals.
