Year Five/Six News

Senior students have been preparing for the 2025 Writers Festival sharpening their skills and learning new concepts to add in to their narrative pieces. This week we have been learning about simple, compound and complex sentences, adding in the five senses, using figurative language, incorporating the show don't tell strategy and also learning about developing their character description including internal and external features. They have been doing an amazing job up - levelling their writing and we are extremely excited to read their final version of their Writers Festival piece.
In reading, students have been learning about inferencing. They have been finding clues and messages throughout our class novel, 'Detention' and trying to link that to their overall comprehension and understanding. The book 'Detention' has been a fantastic book about refugees in Australia and how detention centres work. It has created a lot of conversation about what refugees have to endure and how they can connect within communities in Australia.
In Maths we have been focussing on Multiplication and Division. Students have been learning how to complete multiplication problems using the area/box method, Lattice method and a traditional algorithm. Please have a conversation with your child about these three strategies and let them show you how they can complete them. Students are encouraged to practice and learn their multiplication as much as possible when they are at home.
