Principal's Update

Mr Brett Van Berkel

Principal Catholic College Sale

Dear College Community,

As Term 3 comes to an end, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a deeply challenging yet truly heartening time for our College. We have faced difficulties together, and the support shown, both within our school and from the wider community, has genuinely reflected who we are as a Marist school with Sion heritage. In times of need, we unite with compassion, resilience, and steadfast solidarity. That spirit of care and connection is what makes Catholic College Sale so special.

Our senior students, especially those in VCE and VM, have navigated a very busy term filled with assessments, SACs and outcome tasks. With these now finished, they enter an important phase in their educational journey.

To our VCE students, I have spoken with them about the importance of prioritising the upcoming weeks. The effort they put in now to prepare for exams will directly influence their ATAR and future opportunities. Success during this period requires consistent dedication and a willingness to rely on the expertise and support of their teachers. My message to them was simple: aim to do your best, and in doing so, you will open doors to a future full of possibilities.

For our VM students, the focus turns to work placements and job applications. This is an exciting and formative period, and we will continue to support them, offering guidance and encouragement as they take these next steps. I wish each of them the very best in their pursuits.

One of the highlights of the term was our Founders’ Day celebration, my first experience of this event. It was a truly joyful and wholesome occasion that united our community in a meaningful way. The performances from each House and individual students displayed the incredible talent we have in the performing arts. Watching students from Year 7 to Year 12 work together and perform with pride was a testament to the strength of our College spirit.

We also held our Passing of the Flame ceremony, where we honoured our 2025 student leaders and welcomed the 2026 leadership team. I spoke about the importance of servant leadership, which lies at the heart of our Marist and Sion traditions. I would like to personally thank Stella Whitford and Oscar Millar for the grace, compassion and insight they have shown in representing our College. I also warmly welcome our new College Captains for 2026, Abdulaleem Hanafi and Jemma Fisher. I look forward to working with them and the entire student leadership team in the year ahead.

Another notable moment this term was the Timor-Leste immersion experience. By all accounts, it was a transformative journey for our students, an opportunity to meet the beautiful Timorese people and witness firsthand the impact of our fundraising efforts in supporting education and building classrooms. It served as a powerful reminder of our global responsibility and the difference we can make through faith and action.

As we approach the break, I encourage all families and staff to use this time to rest, recharge and reconnect with loved ones. Wishing everyone a safe and peaceful holiday.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for being part of this extraordinary community.

God bless,

Brett Van Berkel
