Year -1/2 Unit

What a busy and exciting few weeks we’ve had in the 1/2 cohort!

Book Week

We were blown away by the fabulous costumes students wore to celebrate Book Week. It was wonderful to see so much creativity and effort from everyone. We especially enjoyed hearing students share their favourite books and the inspiration behind their costumes. A big thank you to the parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, and uncles who joined us in the classroom to help with our “feelings balloons” activity — the students loved sharing this experience with you.

Pyjama Day

Pyjama Day was a huge hit! Everyone looked super cosy in their PJs, oodies, and slippers, and enjoyed the chance to spend a school day in comfort. Thank you to all the families who generously donated items to support our fundraiser — your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Excursion to Hanging Rock

As part of our Inquiry unit on Australian landmarks, we visited Hanging Rock. The students had a brilliant time exploring the rock formations, pausing near the top to use their five senses to notice the sights, sounds, and smells around them. At the Information Centre, they were fascinated by the skeletons of local animals, studying different types of animal scat, and crawling through the “Picnic at Hanging Rock” tunnel. Of course, there was also time for fun — kicking the footy on the oval, playing on the playground, and trying to keep our lunches safe from the cheeky crimson rosellas! A very big thank you to our amazing parent helpers — your support made the day run smoothly.

Writing

In Writing, we have been exploring poetry. Students have enjoyed experimenting with different forms, including:

  • Couplet poems — two-line poems with rhyming words and a similar rhythm.

  • Sense poems — using ideas from our excursion to describe what we saw, heard, touched, smelt, and even tasted.

The creativity and imagination in students’ poetry has been fantastic to see.

Maths

In Maths, our focus has been on division. Students have been learning to use number lines, arrays, and grouping strategies to solve problems and explain their thinking.

Reading

In Reading, we’ve been linking our work to poetry by exploring rhyming words and the features of couplets. We’ve also been learning that poems can be written for different audiences, have a range of purposes, and can make us feel different emotions.

Speaking and Listening

Students have also been doing a wonderful job in Speaking and Listening. Each week, they have been sharing a picture storybook with the class, reading aloud in a nice, clear voice. It has been obvious how much they have been practising at home, and we are so proud of the confidence and expression they are showing when reading to an audience.
