Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

What a Fortnight It’s Been! We’ve had so many fantastic events over the past two weeks that we barely noticed we’ve passed the halfway point of the term!

Book Week

Last week we celebrated Book Week with a dress-up day and parade on Wednesday. A huge thank you to all the families for your dedication with costumes and also joining us for our writing activity in the morning sessions. It was fantastic to see such a wide range of characters, from mice to dragons, princesses to a whole footy team of athletes!

Smoothie Bar

On Thursday, our Senior Unit students participated in a full-day Smoothie Bar incursion, hosted by MiniBoss. Students worked in teams of up to six to design a business with a logo, slogan, revenue and profit goals, and advertising. Each team created and taste-tested two smoothie recipes before preparing their final pitch. Congratulations to the winning team, Six Sips, and well done to everyone for working so collaboratively and enthusiastically! Be sure to check out some photos from the event.

Literacy & Inquiry

This fortnight we’ve begun a new literacy unit on multigenre texts. Students are undertaking a project-based task where they research one topic and create multiple text types to showcase their knowledge. Inquiry has been integrated into this, with students developing their own business ideas based on a made-up product or service. They have written business proposals, chosen which texts they will complete, and are now working on persuasive pieces - most choosing to create advertisements. We’ve seen some very creative and innovative business ideas already!

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been learning how to analyse and interpret different sets of data. They’ve applied their skills to real-world statistics, including exploring trends in customer activity and the factors that influence choices. They’ve also looked at ABS statistics for our local area, compared them with media reports, and practised finding the mode, range, and describing the shapes of graphs.

Home Learning

As students are currently working on their Multigenre Unit, which covers literacy and inquiry, there has been no home learning set. We have limited time in class for students to fully draft and publish their 3 writing pieces, so we ask that they continue to work on this independently at home. If you are looking for some maths activities, we highly recommend having a look through the games on Love Maths. This website has been created by Michael Minas, who is leader in mathematics in Victoria. Each game has a video to show how it is played, as well as an outline of what concepts are covered: https://www.lovemaths.me/games
