Article by Brandon Fuga - Year 11 Year Level Leader
Our Year 11 Legal Studies students recently had the privilege of hearing from Rob Hulls, former Attorney-General of Victoria and current Director of the Centre for Innovative Justice at RMIT University. With a distinguished career in both law and politics, Mr Hulls offered students a captivating insight into the workings of the legal system, the process of law reform, and the vital importance of ensuring access to justice for all.
Students were particularly engaged by Mr Hulls’ personal journey. From his days as a Year 12 student to becoming Victoria’s Attorney-General and Deputy Premier. His legal career began at Victoria Legal Aid, before taking him to Mount Isa in North Queensland, where he passionately defended Aboriginal social justice issues. It was during these formative years that his commitment to justice was congealed.
This dedication ultimately led to groundbreaking reforms in Victoria’s Criminal Justice System. Mr Hulls was instrumental in the creation of the Drug Court, the Koori Court, the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, and the introduction of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights. All of which are significant features of Victoria’s justice system and key case studies in our VCE Legal Studies curriculum.
He left students with two powerful messages:
Step out of your comfort zone from time to time.
Don’t listen to the doomsayers about your future.
Mr Hulls also spoke candidly about his time in Parliament, highlighting both the challenges and the immense opportunities involved in shaping legislative change. His highlight being invited as acting Premier to the 2007 Grand Final to watch his beloved Geelong win. Personally, I am hoping this is sign of things to come for the mighty Cats in 2025!
We extend our sincere thanks to Mr Hulls for generously sharing his time, insights, and experiences with our students. We look forward to Mr Hulls returning to Overnewton in 2026.
