What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5
What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 9 and 10
Wellbeing
Students will focus on skills, attributes as well as the roles and responsibilities of the Upstanders Program. The Upstander Program encourages students to become aware of their potential to make a positive difference, and offer practical tools for standing up against racism, bullying and prejudice by empowering participants to take positive action – in the schoolyard and in our communities.
Literacy
Over the next two weeks, students will continue exploring how to write an engaging narrative. We will follow the writing process which includes the steps: planning, drafting, revising, editing, teacher conference and publishing. We have started unpacking ideas for a ‘seed’ and have discussed several different writers and other famous people who use Writer’s Notebooks. All the Year 5 teachers have finished the intensive Word Origins professional development and we are looking forward to implementing this spelling program.
Maths
In the coming weeks, we are going to solve problems involving decimals, factors and multiples.
Knowledge Unit
Students will be discussing the roles that important individuals had on the goldfields during the Gold Rush. They will be creating a timeline of the important events that took place in Australian history at this time too.
Homework
Our students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. Students need to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to record their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking these diaries to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders. Students have also all been sent home with Mathletics logins and allocated activities.
Year 6
What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 9 and 10
Year 6 students are loving participating in Interschool Sports. They have learnt the skills of the different sports and look forward to showing their sportsmanship at school or against other local schools. The Year 6’s have accepted their roles as BPS role models of the school with enthusiasm. They are thoroughly enjoying their responsibilities as Dolphin Researchers, Captains, school tour guides, radio hosts and overall great students.
Wellbeing
In their Wellbeing subject, Year 6 students will explore their personal strengths, reflecting on qualities that make them unique and resilient. This self-awareness will empower them to recognise how their strengths contribute to their overall wellbeing and (academic) growth.
Literacy & Knowledge Unit
The Year 6 students are still exploring the novel Us Mob, which offers valuable insights into the history and culture of Indigenous Australians. As part of their studies, they are also writing a factual recount of the 1967 Referendum, a pivotal moment in Australia's history.
Maths
In the coming weeks, Year 6 students will be learning about area and time, applying mathematical concepts to solve practical problems and enhance their problem-solving skills.
Homework
Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge.
