Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 Families,
We are more than half way through the term now and we have been seeing some amazing learning taking place in our Grade 1 classrooms.
Here's a summary of what we have been learning:
InitiaLit
We have been learning some new digraphs in InitiaLit this past fortnight including ‘oo’ and ‘ng’. Students have been busy doing activities with these sounds such as being sound detectives, identifying missing parts of a word and writing super sentences. Our students know a super sentence must start with an uppercase letter, finish with a full stop, tell us about someone or something and it must make sense. Grade 1 students have continued to strengthen their handwriting skills using dotted third lines and we are starting to really see a difference in their writing! During the last few weeks of Term 1, students will explore compound words, and learn the digraphs ai/ay and ee/ea.
Maths
Our Grade 1 students have been continuing to strengthen their number fluency as they have begun to engage in number fluency lessons each day. We have also been learning about polygons, in particular pentagons, hexagons and octagons. The next few weeks will see our students learning more about number bonds and determining the missing whole from a number bond.
Knowledge Building
In Knowledge Building our Grade 1 students have been learning about maps, countries and continents. Students have been able to identify features of a map including a compass rose and map key. Each lesson, Grade 1 students have been delving into a different continent to learn about special places, animals and things that make up that continent. You can support your child with locating different countries and/or continents on a globe or map at home.
Respectful Relationships
In our Respectful Relationships lessons, students have been learning about different emotions. This fortnight they will focus on pride and the actions that make them feel proud. Students will also identify strengths they use at school. You can support and encourage your child by speaking with them about what makes you proud.'
Digital Technologies
In Digital Technology, students have been learning about trusted adults in their lives and who they can go to when they are feeling unsafe online. You can support this learning at home by talking with your child about the trusted adults in their life.
Celebrations
Yesterday we celebrated all of the wonderful different cultures we have at Tarneit Rise Primary School and what a wonderful Harmony Day we all had! The performances were spectacular and the students looked amazing in their cultural dress.
On the calendar
The Grade 1 Beats from the Soul incursion is coming up in weeks 9 and 10. We are super excited to have this opportunity for our students to engage in drumming games, rhythm and mindful awareness.
Thanks for your continued support!
