Visual Arts News

Hello Families,

Artists this week have been learning about the Elements of Visual Arts. By observing how artists have used the Elements in their own artworks, students can be inspired to explore different ways of expressing their views through their art and exploring how different mediums can create different visual effects!

Prep

The Prep students have been diving into the colourful world of abstract art, drawing inspiration from the legendary artist Wassily Kandinsky. Students have been discovering how to use shapes, lines, and primary colours to create their own vibrant works of art. They have shown fantastic creativity and began experimenting with blending to create secondary colours.

Grade 1

Our Grade 1 artists have been refining their fine motor skills by using oil pastels to create patterns inside the wings of a butterfly guided-drawing. Using rainbow watercolours and pastels, students were able to demonstrate the order of the rainbow colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

Grade 2

Our Grade 2 artists have been using watercolour and oil pastel to explore the elements of line, shape, and repetition to create the illusion of texture in their rainbow coloured crocodile drawings from last week. To add texture, students can draw round lines and shapes onto their crocodile to make it look bumpy or look smooth, while pointy, sharp lines and shapes show a more spiky texture!

Grade 3

Our Grade 3 artists have added beautiful cityscapes to their watercolour sky backgrounds from last week. By using a collage technique, students were asked to design, cut and paste a silhouette of a city landscape using black paper. After this, students used paint markers to add details to their city, such as windows and doors. As you can see from the pictures, the overall effect of using positive and negative space in their artwork was quite effective!

Grade 4

In Grade 4, students have been exploring their local area through a creative lens, designing aerial view maps inspired by Aboriginal artwork. They have learned to use lines, colors, and symbols to represent key landmarks and features of their community. By carefully studying the landscapes around them, students transferred their findings onto paper using vibrant pastels.

Grade 5

In Grade 5, students have created vibrant collages of their city, using textured materials and patterns to bring their landscapes to life. Through this activity, they explored the elements of design and the importance of texture in creating depth and interest in their artwork. Students have also begun researching endangered animals, selecting a species to focus on. They are now sketching and adding color to their chosen animal or bird, with the goal of sending a powerful message about conservation and the importance of protecting our planet's most vulnerable creatures.

Grade 6

Grade 6 students have completed their city collage project, where they added intricate patterns and details while maintaining a consistent color scheme, bringing their landscapes to life. This activity allowed them to experiment with textures and design elements. In addition, they began exploring still life drawing techniques, drawing inspiration from the work of Australian artist Carmen Hui. Students have started sketching Australian-themed still life compositions, focusing on observation, shading, and texture.
