Grade 6 Community News

Grade 6 have been working hard the past 2 weeks, with only a few weeks to go before the end of Term One, there are still plenty more enjoyable learning experiences on the horizon.
Reading:
We have concluded our first serial text of the year, Freak the MIghty. The students learned about motifs, foreshadowing and symbolism amongst many other literary techniques whilst studying this heartwarming text. The students will be learning about the Enlightenment until the end of term. The students will be reading about influential figures like Isaac Newton and John Locke.
Writing:
For writing, Grade 6 have concluded writing their own realistic narratives. The students have created interesting characters, vivid settings and exciting plots. It has been wonderful to see the students apply their learning from Syntax, by including aspects such as direct speech in their narratives. For the rest of the term, the students will be focusing on RAP responses in Writing. This is when the students restate the question, answer the question and prove their thinking with evidence from the text, in response to a ‘Big Question’ about what they have read.
Maths:
In Mathematics, we learned about the order of operations. The students learned the order in which operations are done when there are multiple in an expression. The students also evaluated and constructed their own expressions. The students will continue to apply their knowledge of the order of operations during week 8 and will explore area in week 9.
Sport:
All Grade 6 students have been participating in sport fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons. This week, Cricket, Basketball, T-Ball, Tennis, and Volleyball teams will have their final preparations before Gala Day in week 9.
