Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!
Week 7 and 8 of term 1 have been busy and full filling for PLC 5, with NAPLAN, Harmony Day and House Athletics. The students have shown amazing flexibility and resilience during NAPLAN and the community building activities of Harmony Day and Athletics.
Knowledge Building
We have now completed the Wild Robot. In week 9 and 10 we will start a novel study on the text How was it Built?. How Was That Built? is a captivating book which delves into the engineering achievements behind some of the world’s most remarkable architectural wonders. From towering skyscrapers to expansive bridges, the planet boasts countless awe-inspiring structures. But what makes them work? The book introduces students to the visionary individuals who defied conventional limits, creating groundbreaking inventions that made possible the Brooklyn Bridge in the US, innovative techniques engineers have developed to construct buildings underground, underwater, on ice, and even in space. It is written by award-winning structural engineer Roma Agrawal, with vivid full-colour illustrations by Katie Hickey.
Mathematics
We are continuing the topic of multiplication and division. In this 12-lesson topic, students will be using the multiplication and division algorithms for increasingly larger and more complex numbers involving regrouping. There will be a focus on early algebra, where students solve for unknown values in equations using fact families. In addition, this topic encourages students to think flexibly about numbers, applying the associative and distributive properties to solve equations.
Reminders
- Just a reminder that in Term 1, students need to be wearing a TRPS school hat during recess and lunchtimes.
- Student journals will not be being sent home this year. Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
