Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,

Can you believe that we are already in week 8? The term is just flying! A massive congratulations to our incredible Grade 3 students who have just completed NAPLAN for the very first time. We are all so proud of you.

NAPLAN

Over the past 2 weeks, our Grade 3 children have been working hard to prepare for, and complete their NAPLAN assessment. We want to give a MASSIVE congratulations to all of our incredible students, who completed their first ever NAPLAN. We are all so very proud of you.

Knowledge Building

In our knowledge building unit, students have continued to question the author and unpack our class novel Matilda. The students have continued to increase their skills in taking stop and jots, a skill where students respond to the questions using note taking skills, before responding to the big question or idea.

In the second part of our English block, students engage in grammar and sentence-level writing instruction before applying these skills to their own writing. The students are now focusing on persuasive writing and unpacking different techniques that authors may use.

Numeracy

In maths, we have continued to explore addition and subtraction, building on the skills learned in our previous place value unit. Students are learning to recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction as inverse operations. They are applying this understanding to successfully partition numbers and solve problems with unknown values in number sentences, strengthening their problem-solving skills. The students have even had the opportunity to explore the functions of a calculator and how they can further support their learning.

Vocabulary

This term our target words will be coming from our novel study Matilda. Our week 7 words were confide, vivid, profound, compel, petrified and insist and our week 8 words are ponder, colossal, scowl, elated, frantic and enquire. You may wish to support your child by assisting them to use these words in context.

Friendly Reminders

  • We are still experiencing sunny weather, so it is vital that children wear their hats at school for terms 1 and 4.
  • Please remind your child to bring their fully charged iPad to school ready for learning.
