Year -1/2 Unit

Wow, can you believe we’re already in Week 7? The Year 1/2 students have been busy as ever, with lots of exciting learning happening!
Incursion/Excursion to Kyneton Pool
A highlight of the week was when Marie from Kyneton Pool visited our class to explain the four different stations the students will experience during their upcoming excursion. This excursion will start this week, so please check Compass for the dates and times for when your child’s class will be going. If you're unsure, feel free to contact your child's teacher for more details.
We also discussed what the students need to bring:
Bathers (worn under their uniform when they arrive at school)
A waterproof bag with:
A towel
Underwear
A swimming cap (compulsory for all students, so please make sure this is purchased/obtained before the excursion)
We also talked about how to stay safe around water and the importance of being Sunsmart while outside.
Reading
In reading, we’ve been exploring persuasive texts. Students have been identifying the features of persuasive writing, including the target audience and the purpose of the text. They’ve been thinking about who the text is written for and what message the author is trying to communicate.
Writing
This week in writing, we are transitioning from learning about opinions to turning those opinions into persuasive pieces. We’ve been focusing on how to take an opinion and back it up with strong reasons to convince others. The students have been having a great time expressing their opinions on topics such as why they should be allowed to stay up later, why their siblings are annoying, and (our favourite) why a rhino is just a "fat unicorn"! They are really enjoying learning how to persuade others with their words.
Maths
In maths, we’ve been using skip counting with coins to figure out totals. The students have been practising counting by 5s, 10s, and 20s to add up different amounts of money. For example, they figured out how many 5c coins are needed to make $1.00 and $2.00 (the answer is 20 coins for $1.00 and 40 coins for $2.00!). They’ve also been using skip counting on a number line, creating counting patterns that decrease, and identifying missing numbers in a pattern.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the students have been using iPads and Kiddle to research a chosen invention. They’ve been learning about their invention’s name, when and who it was made by, what it does, who it helps, and any other interesting facts. After gathering their information, the students are drawing diagrams of their inventions and creating brochures to explain their invention’s brilliance to an audience.
