Foundation Unit

This fortnight in Phonics students received a new list of letters and sounds that we have been practicing in class. Thank you to those who are continuing to practice these at home too, along with their Magic Words. This week we are investigating the letters e, u and r.
In Reading, students have continued to practice identifying the initial sound of a word to help them with reading. They have also learnt to use the pictures to help predict what might happen next in the text.
In Writing, students have continued to work on sound counts. Students sound out words and record the sounds they hear in the words. This week we have been learning to write a simple retell, writing about the beginning, middle and end of the text.
In Maths, students have been working on reading numbers and using concrete materials or drawings to represent the number. Students have been practicing organising their concrete materials or drawings in a way that is easy for someone to count how many there are (subitising).
Last week the students participated in the very first Cross Country. It was so nice to see all the students dressed in their house colours and very excited for the day.
Foundation students also attended their very first Assembly last week. The students were very excited to see the whole school, student awards, and sing the national anthem. We were extremely proud of how they conducted themselves during the event. Students returned to the class with very positive feedback - ‘that was the best thing ever!’.
