A message from Emily Murcott - Assistant Principal / Wellbeing Literacy

I hope everyone enjoyed the Friendly February calendar that was shared at the start of February. I source these from Action For Happiness.  This terms focus is on mindfulness and is called Mindfulness March. This calendar is full of great ways to help you feel less distracted or overwhelmed.  I hope you enjoy the calendar and the activities that go with   it :)

Below you will find a few different parent sessions that are on offer in the local community or online in the next few weeks. I believe it is important to share these as the more information you learn then you can pick and choose what is right for you and your family.

Below is information for:

  • Supporting anxious children
  • Dad's chat, and
  • Mindful Parenting

Supporting anxious children

Next date: Wednesday, 05 March 2025 | 07:30 PM to 08:30 PM

Does your child worry, feel anxious and seem stressed at times?

Would you like to gain a greater understanding of anxiety and learn some helpful strategies to support your child?

Learning to cope with anxiety, stress and fear, whilst a normal part of your child’s development, can be deeply challenging not only for children but also for parents and the family unit as a whole.

Participants will:

  • Develop strategies to support children through understanding the role of anxiety and normal childhood development.

Dads Chat - Term 1, 2025

Next date: Wednesday, 05 March 2025 | 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM

A strengths-based series of four workshops that focus on connecting with other local dads and dives deep into your role as a dad or male carer.

For dads, grandfathers, step-dads and male carers with children aged 0 to 8 years.

Join Tony from Building Better Brains to share ideas and get hands on with tools and techniques that make you feel more connected to your children and other dads.

This series of workshops will explore:

  • Communication, patience and play: Sharing ways to communicate, regulate and play with children and family members that suits your dad skills best.
  • Fatherhood and all the feels: Supporting the emotional ups and downs of your children.
  • Understanding the developing brains of children: Tips and techniques to support your child.
  • Parenting styles and attachment: Understanding our Fatherhood Origin Story and how to build more robust connections with children and family members.
  • The power of play: The present of being present, the only gift that matters. Tools to maximise the thing we often have so little of as dads, time.

Please note that these sessions are designed for adults and are not suitable for children to attend.

A social event for children to attend with their dads/male carers will be planned for the end of term 1. Details for this event will be discussed with the group.

About the presenter - Tony Vallance

I am all in on helping Dad's to connect, share and learn as when my kids where young, it was a very isolating experience. I didn't know who to talk to, who to share ideas with, how to ask for advice or help, it was really hard. From all I've learned as a Dad, Teacher and Therapist, I want to give back, to help in a small way to connect Dad's and help them to realise this journey of fatherhood can be more of a team effort instead of a solo climb.”

Mindful Parenting

Helping families to be calmer, less stressful and more joyful. This free workshop will introduce the basic principles of mindfulness and how parents / carers can include them in family life.

Mindful Parenting will explore using mindful awareness to promote the development of attention in children and teens, build optimism and assist parents / carers to respond more calmly to everyday interactions.
