Principals Report

Stephen O'Shannessy

This week, we celebrated Harmony Week.  A special time for us as a school to recognise Australia’s rich cultural diversity and the many benefits it brings to our communities. Held from 17 to 23 March, the week is dedicated to fostering inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for all, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. It also includes the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) on Friday 21 March, reinforcing our commitment to equality and unity.

At St. Mary’s, we recognise that our diversity is one of great strength. Building on over 65,000 years of First Nations cultures, Australia has welcomed people from nearly 300 different ancestries, each contributing their traditions, stories, and customs to our national identity. Throughout the week, students engaged in meaningful activities and discussions that highlight the importance of respect, understanding, and unity. From exploring cultural traditions to sharing personal stories, these experiences help foster a more inclusive and connected community. The colour orange has been chosen as the official colour of Harmony Week as it symbolises social communication, meaningful conversations, and mutual respect—values that we embrace at St. Mary’s. We also reinforce the message of Harmony Week, that everyone belongs.

Parents and Friends

We are looking for enthusiastic parents to join our Parents & Friends (P&F) Group at St Mary’s! This is a great opportunity to connect with other families, support our school, and make a meaningful impact on our students' experience.

Being part of the P&F group allows you to build friendships within our school community while contributing to school events and fundraising initiatives. It’s a chance to support and enhance student learning experiences, have a say in projects that benefit our children, and set a great example of community involvement for your child.

If you can contribute in any way—big or small—please contact me. We’d love to have you on board!

Pupil Free Day - Classroom Mastery

A reminder that Wednesday, 2nd of April, is a pupil-free day. Staff will be trained in Classroom Mastery. Organised by Catholic Education Sandhurst Ltd and conducted by Knowledge Society, the Classroom Mastery Behavioural Curriculum ensures that students develop essential social, emotional, and behavioural skills in a structured and progressive manner. Rather than viewing behaviour management as a reactive discipline, this curriculum focuses on explicitly teaching positive behaviours, self-regulation, and social responsibility. The goal is to help students internalise respectful, responsible, and resilient behaviours that align with the values of Catholic education.
