From the State Athletics
Mali from 4O went to Casey fields for state athletics, representing Ringwood little athletics. Here is her snapshot of her day:
First I did shotput and came 7th in the under 10 girls and got a ribbon. 6.18m which is a PB (PERSONAL BEST).
Next I did discus and I threw with my right hand. It’s my favourite event, but I didn’t get in the top eight.
I also did 60 metre hurdles and came 9th out of everyone there.
Finally, on Saturday I did high jump and jumped 1.5m. My friend came first in high jump.
The weekend was very fun and lots of awards were given out. There were also 60 clubs participating in the state athletics.
Well done Mali. You should be super proud of your efforts!
From the Melbourne Speed Cubing Competition
Spark Melbourne Speed Cubing Competition by Zach Hall - 4O
On the 22nd of February, I went to Spark Melbourne Speed Cubing Competition with my dad. It was a sunny 41 degrees, but the competition was under a cafe so it wasn’t too hot. If you don’t know how a speed cubing competition works, here’s how:
- Competitors drop off cubes at scrambling table
- Cubes scrambled
- Cubes given to competitors
- Cubes solved
- Cubes are collected
- Steps are repeated 5 times
- Scores are collected and entered.
I entered in 3 events: 3x3, 2x2 and Pyraminx.
The first event I entered was 3x3. There were 5 groups and 20 tables. I was in Group 4, Table 17, and was given a judge younger than me!! I broke my average record[5 tries] and got a 34s time. My friend was there to watch 3x3 but left after because of the long gap between 3x3 and Pyraminx.
Pyraminx is a pyramid shaped rotating puzzle which many ‘Cubers’ favour. After a large Subway lunch, my tummy was very full. For me, Pyraminx is not as important as 3x3 but I kind of like it.
I got given the same judge as 3x3 so I decided to make friends with him. I broke 2 PBs in just that event and began the long wait for 2x2.
2x2 is a puzzle that I can solve in seconds! My judge was the same as 3x3 and Pyraminx and I broke the Year 4 record for average and single. After 2x2 I won a skube in a raffle that had 140 people.
PB= personal best
YB=year level RNPS record
SR=RNPS record
NR=national record
WR= world record
My results were:
3x3 average: 42s. - YB.
3x3 single: 34s. - YB.
2x2 average: 13s. - YB
2x2 single: 9s. - YB
Pyraminx Average: 19s - PB
Pyraminx single: 15s. - PB
My favourite part of the competition was how kind everyone was, so if you hear about a competition, please come and I guarantee you will have fun!!
