你 好 (ni hao) Welcome to our Specialists’ corner! See below a summary of the Chinese learning progress in the first few weeks of Term 3:

Both Junior and Senior primary students continue making fantastic progress in their language learning endeavour. The key learning topic for these few weeks across all year levels is ‘Introduce oneself in Chinese.’ This creates opportunities for personal expression where students talk about themselves, making learning meaningful and memorable. Not only they learnt how to say the sentences but they also having fun to learn to use the basic strokes to write a range of Hanzi (Chinese writing) that are relevant to the topic.

Foundation students’ key sentence - "Hello everyone! I am Peter (name)."

Our Foundation students have been learning how to introduce themselves in Chinese by saying, "Hello everyone! I am Peter (name)." They also took on the exciting challenge of writing their very first Chinese characters (Hanzi). It was heartwarming to hear the classroom filled with joyful exclamations such as, "YayI did it!" and "It's not as hard as I thought!" after their first courageous attempt. Students were amazed by what they had achieved and beamed with pride as they realised they could complete the ‘daunting’ task independently. These wonderful moments of success are helping to build their confidence, resilience, and enthusiasm for learning Chinese, while laying a strong foundation for their future language-learning journey.

Grade 2 students’ key learning - Numbers, self-introduction and Hanzi writing

Grade 2 students have been learning to translate numbers and confidently introduce themselves in Chinese by saying, "Hello everyone! I am Peter (name). I am eight years old." Like our Foundation and Grade 1 students, they have shown wonderful perseverance and dedication as they practised writing Chinese characters (Hanzi). It has been fantastic to see the care and effort they put into developing this new and challenging skill.

Grade 3 & 4 and Grade 5 & 6 students’ key learning - Self-introduction in Chinese

Students in Grades 3 and 4, Grade 5 and 6 have been learning to confidently introduce themselves in Chinese by saying: "Hello everyone. I am Peter (name). I am 10 years old. My birthday is (month) (day). I attend Mount Pleasant Road Primary School. Thank you, everyone!" While learning these key sentences, students have also been practising writing the corresponding Chinese characters (Hanzi), helping them strengthen both their speaking and writing skills. This integrated approach is building their confidence across speaking, listening and Hanzi writing skills.
