Junior School

你 好 (ni hao) Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 families,

Wow! What a fun-filled week we have had in Foundation, celebrating 100 Days of School and making wonderful memories at our Grandparents and Special Friends Afternoon.

Celebrating 100 Days of School was a huge milestone, and we are so proud of every Foundation student! They have come such a long way since the beginning of the year and continue to show enthusiasm, resilience and a love of learning. It was a day full of excitement as students made 100 Days crowns, created portraits of themselves as 100-year-olds, counted to 100 with Pevan & Sarah, played Race to 100, enjoyed a bubble dance party, brainstormed over 100 words they know (and even things their teachers have said 100 times!), and, of course, took part in our much-anticipated 100 Days Parade.

A huge thank you to our parents, families and friends who came along to support their child and embraced the dress-up theme. Events like these wouldn't be possible without your support, and we are so grateful. Please enjoy the photos below from our fantastic day, and keep an eye on Seesaw for your child's 100 Days of School writing recount.

On Wednesday, we welcomed our grandparents and special friends into our classrooms to support our learning across Guided Inquiry, English and Mathematics. It was a wonderful afternoon of learning across generations as students listened to stories about each other's past, created family trees, explored family history, and connected their own stories to culture, diversity and inclusion around the world. This learning has been supported through our text study, What Do You Call Grandma?, where students have explored the many different names we use for our grandparents, including Nonna, Ra Ra, Pa, Grandma, Bi Bi, Yia Yia and Nan. Through this text, we have celebrated the themes of love, respect, family and culture while recognising the rich diversity within our Foundation community.

In Phonics, students have been introduced to the Floss Rule for the grapheme-phoneme correspondences ff, ll, ss and zz. We learned that these consonants are often doubled when they come after a short vowel (a, e, i, o or u), as in boss, fuzz, off and doll. Students have also been revising the digraphs wh, ck and th. The /th/ sounds can be tricky to articulate, so we encourage you to practise this at home by reminding your child to keep their tongue behind their top teeth. Placing the teeth on the bottom lip produces the /f/ sound instead.

In Mathematics, students have been exploring Statistics by collecting, organising and interpreting data. They have created graphs to represent our class's favourite colours, foods and fruits, and have also investigated the countries our families come from. It has been a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity of our school community and recognise that we are proud to be part of such a rich multicultural community here at MPRPS.
