Discovering Future Pathways
by Ms Fiona Fuller, Careers Coordinator
The Careers Team has had a busy and exciting start to Semester 2, supporting students through the Senior Subject Expo and the Year 10 Subject Selection process.
Choosing subjects is an important step in every student's pathway, and our goal is to help students select subjects that reflect their interests, strengths and career aspirations, while keeping as many future options open as possible. Whether students are planning to attend university, undertake TAFE, complete an apprenticeship or traineeship, or enter the workforce, thoughtful subject choices can create valuable opportunities after school.
Thank you to our students, families and staff for their engagement throughout the subject selection process. We look forward to continuing to support students as they work towards achieving their future goals.
At the end of last term, our Year 10 students participated in Work Experience, gaining valuable firsthand insight into the world of work. Students explored a wide range of industries, developed workplace skills and experienced what it is like to be part of a professional team.
Many students returned with increased confidence, a clearer understanding of their future career interests and a greater appreciation of the skills employers value.
Congratulations to the students who were so successful during their placements that they were offered ongoing casual employment - an outstanding achievement.
There will be another opportunity for Year 10 students to participate in Work Experience from 30 November – 4 December.
Students who are interested in organising a placement are encouraged to visit the Careers Office for assistance.
We are also pleased to share a selection of student reflections from their Work Experience placements in this edition of the newsletter.
Nil A - For my work experience, I spent five days at Metricon working in the Interior Design Department from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Every day, I was paired with a different employee so I could shadow them, observe client appointments, and learn new skills.

During the week, I had the opportunity to shadow three colour appointments and one technical appointment. I found both types of appointments really interesting and enjoyable. They also made me think differently about interior design, and I found myself noticing the colours of my lights, kitchen, bathroom, and other areas of my home when I got back each day.
While I was there, the company also held an expo, which gave me the chance to experience another side of the business.

I also worked with two other students who were completing their work experience at Metricon. Together, we created several flat lays and turned it into a friendly competition, with everyone voting for their favourite design.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Metricon. I learnt many new skills and gained a much better understanding of the interior design industry. This experience also helped me decide that this is a career I would like to explore after high school.
Frieda H - During the last week of Term 2, I had the opportunity to complete my work experience at the Hong Culture Art Institute, where I helped teach art to students.
At first, I was nervous about leading activities and explaining different techniques, but I quickly became more confident as I began to teach the students.
This experience taught me the importance of patience, clear communication, and adapting my teaching style to suit different learners.
Working alongside experienced artists also gave me a greater insight into what it takes to be a successful art teacher.
After the work experience, I was also lucky enough to be offered a part-time job by my supervisor. Work experience is a really valuable experience, and I recommend it to future students as well.
The Senior Subject Expo was held during the first week of term and provided students and families with valuable information to support informed subject and pathway decisions.

We were fortunate to welcome representatives from universities, TAFEs, Head Start and Victoria Police, who shared their knowledge and expertise with students considering their post-school options. Their advice helped students better understand the pathways available and how subject choices can support their future goals.
Thank you to all of our exhibitors and staff who contributed to the evening and helped make the event such a valuable experience for our school community.

Throughout the remainder of the term, the Careers Team will be meeting individually with every Year 12 student to discuss their plans beyond school.
These one-on-one pathway meetings provide students with personalised advice about university, TAFE, apprenticeships, employment, gap year opportunities and other post-school pathways. Students will also receive guidance on course requirements, application processes and important timelines.
The pathway planning process begins with a Year 12 assembly where students will create their VTAC accounts and learn about the application process for tertiary study. It is always an exciting time of the year as students begin making decisions about their future, and we look forward to supporting them every step of the way.
