YEAR 5

FROM THE CLASSROOM  

Our Grade 5 students have been working hard across all areas of learning this week.

In Mathematics, students have continued learning about Geometry, including classifying, measuring and naming angles. Students created a mini golf course to practice and apply these skills. 

In Writing, students have been independently practicing and applying the toolkit they’ve learnt to successfully write a dialogue narrative. 

In Reading, we have been reading a text called 'The Lost Thing'. Students began by unpacking some of the vocabulary in the text and learning about industrialisation to support them in understanding the text. Prior to reading, students wrote thoughtful predictions on what they thought might happen based on the front cover and background knowledge discussed. 

In Inquiry, students have been analysing and graphing data that was collected in week 3 to identify what their target audience would like to buy during business innovation week. We also looked further at advertisements and their features so students can begin to think about how they will advertise their business.

LEARNING INTENTIONS FOR NEXT WEEK  

READING

We are learning to:

• Use our background knowledge from our previous learning and the world around us.
• Determine real world connections from a text to themselves, other texts and the world around them.
• Identifying third and first-person pronouns.

WRITING

We are learning to:

• Revise and practice previously learned toolkits.
• Make our writing more interesting by including various writers' tools such as, personification, varied tones, and action through speech. 

MATHS

We are learning to:

• Use my knowledge of place value to interpret, compare and order numbers with more than 2 decimal places.
• Describe the relationship of decimals including tenths, hundredths and thousandths and make models by subdividing materials or grids.
•  Rename decimals to assist with mental computation.
• Connect familiar percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents.

INQUIRY

We are learning to:

• Identify persuasive techniques used in advertisements.
• Think of ways to use advertisements for our own business innovation.
• Collaborate with our group to create a business idea. 

WELLBEING

We are learning to:

• Identify and demonstrate the need for clear communication when seeking help.
