Christian Meditation in Primary Schools

Gallery Image

Christian Meditation is a silent, contemplative prayer practice centred on the tradition of the early Christian Desert Fathers and revived by Fr John Main OSB in the early 1970s.

Many Catholic primary schools incorporate Christian Meditation into the school day, and it has been part of the prayer life of St Michael's for many years. Our current practice generally involves students and staff sitting still and upright, closing their eyes or gently focusing on the prayer cloth and candle, breathing calmly and preparing themselves for the shared prayer read by a student. This is followed by a short piece of music and a period of silence and stillness, providing an opportunity to quieten our minds and become more aware of God's presence. During the meditation, we are encouraged to silently repeat the word Maranatha, an Aramaic word meaning "Come, Lord."

At St Michael's, we are currently reflecting on and reviewing our practice of Christian Meditation to ensure it continues to provide a meaningful and sacred opportunity for both students and staff to experience stillness, prayer and a deeper awareness of God's presence.

For evangelisation in the city ...

Let us pray that in large cities often marked by anonymity and loneliness we find new ways to proclaim the Gospel, discovering creative paths to build community.
