Belonging, Acceptance and Student Voice: A Faith in Action
At St Monica’s College, our commitment to student wellbeing is grounded in our faith and the belief in the inherent dignity of every person. Each student is created in the image of God, and as such, deserves to feel known, valued, and accepted within our community.
A strong sense of belonging is essential for young people to thrive. When students feel accepted for who they are, they are more likely to engage positively in their learning, build meaningful relationships, and develop confidence in themselves. This sense of connection is not built through one moment, but through consistent actions, respect, inclusion, and genuine care for one another.
Child Safe Standard 3 reminds us of the importance of empowering students to understand their rights, have a voice, and be active participants in decisions that affect them. At our College, this is reflected in the opportunities we provide for student voice through leadership, the Badano Program, and everyday classroom practice. Just as importantly, we are committed to listening and responding to our students, ensuring they feel heard and respected.
Our faith calls us to live out values of compassion, empathy, and justice. In practice, this means encouraging students to include others, celebrate diversity, and stand alongside one another. When students experience acceptance from their peers and staff, they develop a deeper sense of belonging and are better equipped to navigate the challenges of adolescence.
Families play a vital role in this partnership. Encouraging open conversations, modelling respectful relationships, and supporting your child to share their thoughts and experiences all contribute to their sense of identity and confidence. Small questions such as “Who did you connect with today?” or “How did you show kindness?” can reinforce these important values.
As a College community, we continue to work together to create an environment where every student feels safe, heard, and valued. In doing so, we not only support their wellbeing, but also live out our faith in action, building a community where all are welcomed and all can flourish.
