Our Learning - Weeks 2 & 3

✍️ English

In English, we are exploring information reports and developing our understanding of their structure and features.

  • We are organising our ideas clearly in an information report.
  • We are identifying key features such as headings, facts and topic sentences.
  • We are improving our handwriting for neat and consistent presentation.

We are also reading My Place by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, a picture book that explores one location through the eyes of different children across generations.

  • We are learning about changes in family life and culture from the 1800s to today.
  • We are recognising different points of view and how perspectives shift over time.
  • We are building our comprehension through a range of reading activities.

Maths

In Maths, we are focusing on subtraction concepts during the first part of the term.

  • We are exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction.
  • We are using strategies like backwards doubles facts and backwards 10 facts as part of fact families.
  • We are using the jump back strategy to solve subtraction problems by jumping back on a number line in parts, starting with the biggest number.

🌏 Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is History.

This term in Inquiry, we are exploring the history of Australia and how it connects to people, cultures and events over time.

  • We are recognising and describing significant celebrations and commemorations in Australia and around the world, such as EID, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Bastille Day, Day of the Dead, Thanksgiving, ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week.
  • We are learning what life was like for Aboriginal Peoples before European settlement.
  • We are watching episodes from My Place on ABC iView to explore how life has changed over time and recording our reflections in class.

🧠 Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL, we are building our awareness of respectful behaviour, peer pressure and the impact of violence.

  • We are recognising how gender pressure can affect how people express themselves and make choices.
  • We are learning how to respond respectfully when others are being pressured to fit gender stereotypes.
  • We are developing a definition of violence, including physical, verbal and emotional forms.
  • We are identifying the emotions people may feel when affected by violence.
  • We are learning ways to support others through acts of friendship and kindness.
  • We are participating in respectful class discussions and using strategies to help us feel safe and supported.

🗞️News and reminders

Drink bottles:

Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.

Homework:

Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.

Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
