Year 5 Excursion
Werribee Open Range Zoo
On Wednesday 11th June, our Year 5 students embarked on an exciting excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo, where they had the opportunity to get up close with some of the world’s most fascinating animals. The open-range experience sparked curiosity and inspired learning about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species. It was a day filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable moments!
The bus ride was around one hour long. And first of all we saw the gorillas, cheetah, and the hippos.
We all walked to the safari buses. 5AT and 5JM were in one bus, and 5SC and 5DG were in another one. We went past camels, oryxes, ostriches, zebras, different types of deer, African Lions, Asian Wild Horses, bison, giraffes, antelopes, rhinos and other animals. Our safari bus driver also gave us some interesting facts, like ‘Zebras actually have black skin and white fur’.
We had a meeting with a zoo guide, and she taught us about gorillas, including their threats, preservation, and habitat. She told us about miners wanting coltan, and how it’s destroying gorillas' habitat. Later on, after an hour or so, we lastly saw the leopard tortoise.
