A message from SOF’s Head of SchoolThe Net, Week 9, Term 2, 2025

Primary Athletics Carnival ~ Years 3-6 ~ A Fabulous Winter’s Day of Cheer and Colour

Our Primary Athletics Carnival was a fabulous winter’s day that brought sunshine, smiles and school spirit in equal measure! The oval came alive in a gala of colour as students proudly wore their house colours and cheered one another on from the sidelines.

The air was filled with energy, camaraderie and team spirit, as students gave their best effort in every race, jump and throw. From the determined faces on the track to the high-fives at the finish line, it was clear that this day was about more than competition — it was about encouragement, connection and community.

A big thank you to the staff, Senior Students from Year 9, and students who made the day so memorable. We are proud of every student for participating with such heart and enthusiasm. The memories made on this special day will last well beyond the final whistle!

Congratulations to Our First Holy Communion Candidates

Congratulations to our students who have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. Over the past few weekends, many of our children and their families have been joyfully celebrating this sacred milestone in their faith journey.

Receiving the Eucharist for the first time is a deeply meaningful moment in the life of a Catholic, as our young people encounter Christ in a new and profound way. We give thanks for the guidance of their families, teachers, and parish community who have supported them in their preparation.

May this time of grace draw each child ever closer to Jesus, and may they continue to grow in faith, love and understanding.

Random Acts of Kindness – Living the Good News

Further to my message in our previous Parent Need to Knows (PNTKs), I’m thrilled to share that even more students have come forward with stories of kindness and thoughtfulness shown to them by their peers.

Our school motto, "Live the Good News," continues to shine through the actions of our students. A particularly inspiring example came this week, when a group of students took the initiative to bring cleaning bags from home and worked together to clean our playgrounds. Without being prompted, they recognised a need and acted—demonstrating care for our environment, pride in their school, and respect for shared spaces.

This simple but powerful gesture is a wonderful example of kindness in action. It reminds us all that small efforts, done with heart, can make a big difference—and that our young people are more than capable of leading with compassion and responsibility.

Semester 1 – Parent Student Teacher Conferences in Week With interview times now booked, students are busily preparing to share their learning journeys during next week’s Parent Student Teacher Conferences in Week 10.

These conferences offer a meaningful opportunity for students to reflect on their growth, celebrate achievements, and set goals for continued progress — all in partnership with their teachers and families.

Students are looking forward to sitting alongside their parents and teachers to proudly showcase the goals they’ve been working towards with focus and dedication.

We thank families for their support and look forward to welcoming you into classrooms for these important conversations.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, filled with kindness, joy, and connection.

The Net Kindergarten Term 3 Week 9

English

Throughout this term, Kindergarten has been exploring informative texts in reading. We have been exploring elements of informative texts, such as facts and real pictures. The students have been exploring different topics such as kangaroos, elephants, bats and ants. The students have then been applying this into their writing, by writing informative texts.

Mathematics

Over the last few weeks, Kindergarten has been exploring the concept of time. The students have been exploring the differences between daytime and nighttime, and what activities they do in their everyday lives at these times of the day. The students have been learning about the days of the week, and what an analogue and digital clocks are.

Religion

This term, the students have been exploring the unit question, ‘Who is my neighbour?’. The students have been exploring this question through the scripture passages, Jesus washes the disciples feet and John 13:34 “You should love one another just as I have loved you”. The students have been able to explain that Jesus taught us to be kind to others, and how we can apply this to our everyday lives.

100 days of Kindy

As we enter the last few weeks of term 2, the Kindergarten family celebrated being at school for 100 days. The students and teachers had a blast dressing up, making crafts and decorating biscuits. We had so much fun!

The Net Stage 1 Term 3 Week 9

English

This term, our Year 2 students have been developing their narrative writing skills. They explored the key elements of a narrative, learning that every story has a clear beginning, middle, and end. In particular, they focused on crafting a strong middle section that includes a central problem to be resolved. Students also learned how to create well-rounded characters by considering both internal qualities and external traits.

Over the past few weeks, they brought all these skills together to plan, draft, and publish their own original narratives. The results were incredibly imaginative and engaging. We’re proud of their creativity and progress! Please enjoy reading some samples of their stories below!

Mathematics

Over the past few weeks, Year 2 has been busy exploring the exciting world of data and time. We’ve been learning how to collect and analyse data in a variety of cool ways, including tally charts, picture graphs, and even Venn diagrams. Once we collect our data, we know it’s important to present it clearly and make statements about what we’ve discovered.

Year 2 has also been learning to read and write time using both analogue and digital clocks. One of the most interesting things we discovered was how folding a circle into halves and quarters helped us make clever connections between time and fractions.

Religion

Wizards had the special opportunity to create Sacrifice Beads, inspired by St. Therese of Lisieux, with the help of our Year 6 buddies. St. Therese, known as the 'Little Flower,' used these beads to count the small acts of love and sacrifices she offered to God each day. Each bead represents a kind deed, a prayer, or a moment where we choose kindness over selfishness. By making these beads, we learned that even the smallest actions, done with great love, can make a big difference.

We carry this lesson with us and continue to offer our little gifts to God everyday at school.

Environment Day

In Week 6, St Luke’s had an Environment Day. On the day we wore earthy colours or sustainable clothing. We talked about lots of different ways we can help our environment, like picking up rubbish, reusing things, and recycling. We were lucky enough to have some Year 12 Mission students come in to teach us about our call to sustainability and caring for our environment.

Sport

Students have had the opportunity to do a range of different sport activities led by our Year 10 students. They planned the activities and taught Stage 1 the skills needed to do each activity. Stage 1 had a lot of fun working with the older students.

Stage 2 - The Net - Week 9, Term 2

Sport

Stage 2 students have been actively developing their fundamental movement skills, enhancing their agility, awareness, and overall confidence during physical activity. Through engaging games such as dodgeball, Oztag, survival tag, and navigating an obstacle course, students have had the opportunity to build coordination, speed, and spatial awareness in a fun and supportive environment.

Additionally, some Stage 2 students have enjoyed a special opportunity to collaborate with Year 9 students during Sport sessions. The older students have taken on coaching roles, guiding the younger students through a variety of sports and skill-building activities. Each week, students rotate through different sports—including soccer, netball, cricket, volleyball, and basketball—broadening their understanding and skill sets in each area.

This peer-led approach has created a dynamic and enriching learning experience for all involved, fostering leadership, teamwork, and a shared love for sport.

English

Stage 2 students have been focusing on informative writing, where they are learning to structure their texts effectively, use appropriate language features, and identify key information to create clear and engaging reports. As part of this learning journey, they have been exploring a variety of text types and participating in discussions about sharing personal stories to deepen their understanding of different writing purposes.

In addition to their work on informative texts, students have also been setting and working towards personal goals in both reading and writing. These goals are helping them strengthen their literacy skills and become more confident, independent learners.

Science

Stage 2 students have been exploring the fascinating world of forces and energy. Through hands-on experiments, they’ve been investigating how energy can be transferred between different materials. As part of their scientific inquiry, students have been learning to write structured Science reports that include an aim, hypothesis, and detailed observations.

To conclude the unit, students will spend the next two weeks designing and creating a product that demonstrates a type of force or energy. This exciting “design and make” experience will be a fun and engaging way to showcase their learning and creativity as they wrap up the term’s Science unit.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Stage 2 students have been investigating the properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects. They have explored how shapes can be combined, split, and transformed to create new designs and patterns. Students have learned to identify and describe a range of 2D shapes—including triangles, quadrilaterals, and hexagons—as well as 3D objects such as prisms and pyramids.

As part of their learning, students have applied transformations by sliding (translation), flipping (reflection), and turning (rotation) shapes to create symmetrical patterns and tessellations. Throughout these activities, they have confidently used precise mathematical language—such as symmetry, tessellation, rotation, and transformation—to explain their reasoning and describe their designs.

K - 4 CAPA  Week 9

ES1 (Kindergarten)

Students have started learning the drums and beats using drumsticks and buckets for their music unit. Students have been learning the basic beats and notes required for music, these include TA, TI TI and SHH.

Stage 1 - Year 1 and 2

Students in years 1 and 2 have been learning about the story of the Gruffolo for their Drama unit for this term. Over the last few weeks, students have created their own masks for each of the characters involved in the story. They also looked at how the characters moved and acted, and then replicated these moves. To conclude the unit next week, students will work in small groups to reenact the story of the Gruffolo, wearing one of the masks as they take on the role of each of the characters.

Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4

Some Stage 2 classes have begun their exciting new music unit this term. Students are learning to play the keyboard and exploring key musical concepts such as note reading, the treble and bass clefs, timing, and beats. They’ve also been rising to the challenge of learning and performing more complex pieces — a wonderful display of persistence and creativity!

Stage 2 - Year 3 and 4

Some Stage 2 classes are wrapping up their drama unit based on Jack and the Beanstalk. Students have been developing their performance skills by bringing characters to life, expressing emotions and feelings, and working collaboratively to retell this classic tale. Their creativity and teamwork have truly shone on stage!
